Y4 dd, slightly ahead still, but not progressed since end of Y3. How much of a problem is this?

My dd is in Y4 and is slightly ahead in all areas, though not massively so.

Obviously we are happy with this, however, she hasn't progressed in reading at all since the end of Y3. On the face of it, I'm a little concerned, because surely she should have made some progress?

The flip side of this is that she's still a little ahead of the expected level for her age, so maybe it's wrong to be concerned?

Maybe she is an early developer and she is now levelling off?

Very possibly Mutt, but would levelling off mean no progress at all?

She did progress a lot last year in reading, so maybe it's a plateux?

In years 3 and 4, the expected progress is one level between the two years.

On average, a child will make one sublevel's progress in one of the years, and the other two sublevels' progress in the other year.

If she made 2 sublevels' progress in year 3, and her 1 'expected' sub-level progress happens between now and summer, then she is still on target. 3 sublevels in 2 years.

That is all just playing with numbers, though. Best thing to do would be to ask the teacher.

What level is she currently?

The 2a/ 3c cusp is notoriously hard to overcome as the children need to have a deep level of comprehension, which many struggle with.

If she is on target, she should be aiming for a 3b by summer.

I have Mutt. She just said that she's still working higher than the expected level and wasn't concerned that there'd been no progress. I just couldn't see how it was ok to make no progress, iykwim.

Ah well that would make sense Juniper. She seemed to make a lot of progress last year, but it's hard to know what her starting point was as they only gave her KS1 results as a 3 (with no sublevels).

I suppose she could still acheive a further sublevel between now and summer, but what has confused me is that the target level for the end of this year, is the same as she achieved at the end of last year Confused

ok to make no prrogress, or ok to not go up a sublevel?

it is ok not to go up a sub level, she may be doing a lot more things but not quite mastered the one thing she needs to be recorded at a higher level.

I would say it is not ok to make no progress whatsoever.

Why don't you buy her some books which cover her favourite subjects but are more difficult to read than the ones that she's used to?

I understand what you're saying blackeyedsusan, and I agree. Her teacher did mention comprehension as a target for improvement, so I think maybe there's a little bit there that's stopping her from moving up a sublevel.
The bit I'm struggling with is that her target was the same as last year too? It's that which doesn't quite seem right?

Yes, I think I'll do that learnandsay. She's not a particularly avid reader, despite being able to read fairly well. I do think that will be holding her back a bit.
