Parents - would you want to know.....

I work part time in my local primary, teaching a regular selection of kids. I am also friends with some of their mothers.
Q. Would you want to know if I'd caught your dc helping himself to a school calculator? I am absolutely sure he was trying to 'nick' it, and he went bright red when I challenged him.

At the moment I haven't told anyone - school nor parent. Should I tell??

Do you think the DC might try it again?

I would be embarrassed but I would want to know.

I assume you are a teacher rather than a TA?

How old?

Moveslikejagger · 05/03/2012 20:52

If you are sure, then yes, I would want to know.

Presumably the school has guidelines for dealing with this sort of thing? You should follow those. The fact that you are friends with some of the parents shouldn't make any difference at all. Hmm

Would you call the parent if you didnt know them? Any 'tale telling' for want of a better word must be done in the role of teacher; if you wouldnt tell otherwise then dont. Its not fair on the child.

If its a first time offence I'd leave it, he's been busted and to my mind embarrassment shows a type of remorse, its not like he flatly denied it.

To be honest I cant imagine theres anything parents wouldnt want to know so its a bit of a silly question.

Y4 boy. I am a visiting private teacher. I know there's been 'unrest' at home and boy's behaviour has suffered as a result. I know parents very well.

You must go through the appropriate channels and tell the school. They need to deal with it as they see fit.

It is very unprofessional, IMO, for you to tell the parents directly.

Also, stealing is frequently a cry for help. School might already have concerns.

Yes. Through the school. The designated person isn't it?

As he didn't actually take it, I'd casually mention it to class teacher/head of department/whoever is relevant. If he hasn't done anything else it will probably be forgotten. If he is then caught again then I'd expect questions to be asked.

I think as you know the parents very well, it's really important you go through the proper channels for you (cries of favouritism) or them (being able to deal with you as a friend and a professional separately)
