Does anybody know how Y3 science is assessed?

My ds's scientific knowledge is very good so much so I've been a bit concerned re him being stretched as he says a lot of it is too easy in school( got several scientists in the family so think he's got the Heffley science gene). He's just got age related grade in his report which I'm very surprised about but his teacher says although good in discussions he lacks detail in writing/recording.

So is Y3 science graded on recording as well as knowledge and if so how do you marry the 2 together ie not sure ds should be covering scientific knowledge he finds too easy just because his writing isn't as good. Aren't the two separate?

TIA

part of the science AFs are for drawing conclusions from scientific investigation, this is often done through written reports , maybe this is the area the teacher feel needs improving.

Maybe he'll develop the writing as he gets older? I wrote a really ranty email to ds's music teacher after her comments but didn't send it. Along the lines of 'don't you realise how talented my ds is '!

Recording and writing is a huge part of science, if you don't record in the proper way it marks you grade down a huge amount. If I where you I would be concentrating on his literacy and knowing how to write in the third person.

could it just be that they are only assessed to a certain level and are both achieving the top level to which they are assessed

DD1 at the end of Yr2 got 3s in maths and literacy but 2 in science as this was the top level the school assessed to?

The school should not only be assessing Science at a level 2 in year 2. I can't see how that would be necessary.

Well both twins got a 3 for science in Y2 SATS.

This week swotty twin got A(above age) but science boy has now got a B(age related).

Confused

It doesn't have to be done through writing, but the school should certainly be encouraging even a reluctant writer (especially a reluctant writer?) to improve their skills in this area. Quality of Written Communication is assessed at GCSE, using long answer questions.

I agree Fallen. Our school didn't assess science 'til Y3.

My DS wouldn't couldn't write a thing coherently until Year 4/5 - now he is a level 5a in year 6 it will come sometimes it takes time - I was tearing my hair out up till a year ago. He was able in reasoning imagination language just reluctant to write it down it suddenly happened overnight - I don't know who said what to him but finally he decided to pull himself together and perform as well on paper as in his head - he still doesn't like it much but does what he can get away with has to.
