Where's the gh sound from enough?

I see what that disagreement about phonic/phonics sounds was about now. The name of this webpage isn't my choice. It was already named that way!

www.mumsnet.com/learning/phonics/listen-to-the-44-phonic-sounds

the sound gh, as in enough, isn't represented and I can't find an alternative spelling either (it's not "f" people who say enuf is enuf aren't speaking properly!)

It's not any of those sounds.

Assuming you are someone who does speak properly, how would you pronounce it? Personally I would pronounce if the same as ff, but, perhaps, I am just common.

learnandsay · 02/03/2012 13:36

It's a sort of exhaling sound like a puff of air. The same kind of sound you make when you sigh.

Regret I am another who says it /f/ in enough, rough, tough etc.

I can't think if another phoneme which is even close. The voiced form is /v/ but that sounds wrong to me. And I make 'th' with a totally different way.

So I am wondering if your accent has a phonetic variation on this phoneme? Phonemes represent the units of sound which change meaning, not the precise phonetic rendition in every accent.

I'm confused how do you say enough if it's not enuf?

Are you thinking of the sound in Scottish loch and Irish lough ? Because I would argue that there is no English sound like that.

However I would sound enough as enuff, same as cough, and rough.

HouseworkProcrastinator · 02/03/2012 13:43

I speak well proper and I say enuf :) googled it and they all seem to agree the gh makes the f sound as in enough laugh etc or silent as in night right...

HumphreyCobbler · 02/03/2012 13:44

it does make the f sound

kaytola · 02/03/2012 13:47

It is sounded as 'f' in rough and enough but the 'gh' as in night and right is part of the 'igh' phoneme which is the 'i' sound.

Isn't it complicated? :)

HouseworkProcrastinator · 02/03/2012 13:50

I'm surprised any of us learned to read at all!

learnandsay · 02/03/2012 13:59

I agree rough is pronounced ruff

Oh that feels ruff

But enough is definitely not pronounced enuff where I come from. It's more like enu^h

Really? That's interesting, never heard enough pronounced in any other way than enuff. Where are you from?

learnandsay · 02/03/2012 14:06

Islington.

Grin Would you be terribly insulted if I suggested it's you that's not talking 'properly' as I'd hazard a guess that everyone in the UK apart your little pocket of North London pronounces it 'enuff'.

TwoGirlsNowNoSleep · 02/03/2012 14:25

Hi learnandsay,
officially (pronunciation in dictionaries) it's the same pronunciation:

oxforddictionaries.com/definition/enough
Pronunciation of enough: /ɪˈnʌf/
Pronunciation of fun: /fÊŒn/

In the end, the "pure" phonics method is only a starting point to help children how to read and write (and there will be of course be a test at the end of year 1), but children will learn soon that there are different ways of pronunciation and also lots of rules and even more exceptions for reading and writing.

TwoGirlsNowNoSleep · 02/03/2012 14:27

Sorry, I just realised that copy-paste doesn't work with pronunciation letters. I'm not a native speaker so this is the way I check how to pronounce words I don't know.

CecilyP · 02/03/2012 17:28

Do people in Islington pronounce things differently from the rest of London? Not that there is an Islington accent; some are very posh and some are very cockney, whilst others are in-between.

TwoGirlsNowNoSleep hopefully since there is going to be a test in Y1 they have been taught the alternatives since that is what phonics teaching is about.
