year 2 reading at school

Can someone please advise me how often DCs should be reading to a teacher or TA at school in year 2? DC1 read to a TA last Monday and then today, again to a TA (so only twice in nearly 2 weeks). She literally read 2 pages of her book which would have taken 2 - 3 minutes. How can her teacher assess her reading level? Our surname is at the end of the alphabet so I'm not sure if DC1 just keeps getting missed or if this is normal?

My Y2 don't read their reading books to me but we read every day in class from texts selected by me.

DC1 is not reading at all to a TA or teacher at other times. Should alarm bells be ringing?

I went to see DC's teacher in November as DC was becoming reluctant to read the books she was bringing home as they were too advanced. Her teacher agreed and said she noticed it was effecting DC's confidence and that she would take her back a bit. DC then read with a TA a few times a week for the next weeks. There has been hardly any reference to reading in class in her reading record book since Christmas but I trusted that it was being recorded elsewhere. We then went to a parent/teacher meeting before half term and I raised reading again and was told that the TA listens to the children a few times a week. The teacher then got a bit flustered when she looked in her records and I'm guessing she saw DC wasn't reading as often as she thought. I have checked with DC each day since the start of this term so know she has only read twice since they went back. I'm not sure if I'm concerned for no reason or whether to discuss with her teacher yet again?

They will read from the board, they will read books together, they will do guided reading, they will read notes and letters, labels and captions, what they won't do is read "home books"

So I shouldn't be concerned?

Do you feel her reading isn't progressing?

keepmoving · 01/03/2012 20:47

Not really. She was in the top set for reading when I asked that she be moved back a bit and is now apparently at 2c. So I don't think she's even now at the level that school tried to put her at 3 mths ago.

Does her school do guided reading? If so, she should be reading as part of a group at least once a week.

In my year 3 class, we do guided reading twice a week with each group; once with the teacher, and once with my TA (who is actually is a qualified teacher).

I have lots of parents complain via their children (but not to me) that I don't listen to them read individually. I would rather listen to them individually, but it's not my school's policy and seeing as I'm meant to have a focus group with focus questions for every lesson, there's no chance for me to do it unless I do it during lunch or golden time. As you can imagine, the kids are less than keen.

The class has guided reading once a week and parents are asked to support the sessions by listening to the groups so still not to the teacher.

I am surprised they don't use the teacher for guided reading... I use the guided reading time to assess the children, and the comments I make on my assessment sheets decide their levels. If other adults to the assessments, I find I can rarely use them for my own levelling as they haven't pinpointed the specific aspects that I know the children need to focus on.

I would want to discuss that aspect with the teacher more than the fact your DC is not being heard individually.

Thanks Juniper, I guess that's really my concern. I will arrange to see the class teacher.
