hi, my dd started reception in january but since starting she has been off sick more than she has been well and in school, the head teacher says she would prefer dd to be in school, but its not that we are keeping her off for coughs and colds she has been proper poorly, tonsillitis, chest infection, that horrid sickness virus and again now with a chest and throat infection, i know they have to build up their immunity but she was the same when she started nursery, prior to school she was never ill. am i in the wrong to keep her home, i believe half the problem is the school is so damn hot and stuffy these bugs just hang around being passed round and round....

Most schools insist on kids with tummy bugs staying at home. My DS' school has a rule that any puking or bout of the runs means 48 hours off school to stop the bug going right round the class. Is the school a lot bigger than the nursery, ie more bugs? If so, then her immune system will get a good workout and improve fairly soon. But if she's a lot sicker a lot more often than the other DC, it might be worth having a word with your doctor to check there isn't something underlying it all, like asthma.

thank you, and yes the nursery was part of an small infant school, the one she is in now is a very large infant and junior school, i know a few children have been off with this that and the other but will have a word with her teacher thanks x

My DS got everything in his first six months of nursery. This was very annoying as I had to pay for the nursery whether he was there or not, but we had... (deep breath)
Hand foot and mouth
Cough and cold
Norovirus
D&V
Chickenpox
Cough and cold
Norovirus
German fucking Measles despite having had his MMR
D&V
Cold.

Mind you, he now has the immune system of a Sherman Tank. As I said, I know it's tiresome while it's ongoing, but it should settle down soon. Only if she's a lot more ill a lot more often than her classmates, a GP should have a look at her to see if something can be done to help, or if there's something that you need to be aware of.

had to laugh @ sherman tank, just hope her immune systems hurries up, she loves school and is one of them walking whingers at home when she is poorly, i just worry about her attendance and getting behind at school, but will check with her teacher to see if she is off more than the other children x

My DS had chest infections etc but not to the extent that your DD seems to be getting. Hopefully she will grow out of it and her immune system will strengthen but I don't think it does any harm to give extra vitamins and minerals every morning to boost overall health. I have noticed decrease in the levels of sickness in my three since I started supplementing (ages 7, 5 and 3)

Hi everyone,
I'm a bit late in joining this thread - have just been googling "constant illness in reception age children" as my ds is sick yet a-bloody-gain!!!! In fact I've just cleaned up a bed full of yak. Nice. Solidgoldbrass - I can so empathise with you! Since he started school in September he's had:-

Noro twice
Tonsillitis twice (with a temp over 39!)
Random nasty coughs and colds
And now this vomming - not sure what this is.....Confused

He went to nursery twice a week from the age of two and apart from (mild) chicken pox he was NEVER ill. I used to think he was super - healthy as he's Anglo-Indian so a nice mixed gene pool!

None of his friends seem to be s sickly. What's going on??????!!!! He has a healthy diet and I now give him multivits.

Any pearls of wisdom? Also, does anyone know if gastric type bugs are bad news in early pregnancy? I'm around 5.5 weeks

Thanks!
