What could I get for my 6 year old DS to read?

He is in year 1 and his reading has now got to the point where he has just discovered reading to himself at bedtime Smile Is there anything that has inspired your child in their independent reading that I could perhaps get for him? A series or similar would be fab. Thanks for any suggestions.

DS's first big independent reading enthusiasm was the Alfie the Werewolf series (this is the first one). Viking Vik is another good option (this is the first one of those).

I hesitate to mention BeastQuest, which small boys seem to love and their parents to loathe (although, to be fair, while the plots are derivative and repetitive, they do introduce some cracking vocabulary).

They look great, thanks Tmesis Smile

The Magic Tree House series (there are dozens of them) and the Marvin Redpost series (eight of them) went down very well at that age with DS.

DD, apart from bloody Rainbow Fairies, really liked the Jack Stalwart series - I think there are about a dozen of them now.

Oh, and they both loved Horrid Henry, and some classics like Roald Dahl and Dick King-Smith (The Hodgeheg etc).

The Book People or Red House books often have very good value collections of 8-10 books for around a tenner, aimed at this sort of age group.

Ah yes, thanks exexpat, I completely forgot to check out Red House etc!

My DS1 is the same age and loves Dick King-Smith. I have just got the first of the Littlenose books (Littlenose the Hero) by John Grant out of the Library and he is really enjoying it.

Captain Underpants is ever popular and kids like the humour in it.

Astrosaurs are popular in my house as are Spy Dog and Spy Pups. Jeremy Strong writes some really funny stuff my boys really like too.

DS loves Dinosaur Cove. Gets a bit much though, so depends how into dinosaurs they are. The book people have a great offer on at the minute

Would the how to train your dragon series be too hard at the minute. DS loves them but we have quite a few as audio stories

DS ( year 1, turquoise band) is liking the Horrid henry "early reader" format books.
They take one chapter of a regular HH book and turn it into a book with 5 or 6 chapters and lots of pictures breaking up the text. Not so scary for a "just about reading it alone" child. BUT HH just like Year 2 & 3 are tucking into.

DS says Beast quest is too scary but he will try again when he's in year 2. He also liked Mr gum, but found the vocabulary too difficult for solo reading. he likes the "happy family" books.
But his absolute favourite read is a lego catalogue.

Oh fab, lots to look into. Thanks all!

Dinosaur Cove were great first chapter books for boys. Ds also liked Secret Seven and the Roald Dahl books.
