Thats it really.

Teacher is confident he is able to achieve expected levels in reading and writing but he just can't concentrate.

Maths better and achieving end of year level already.

Has been tested for dyslexia etc with no problems.

My dd is 8 and in primary 4 in Scotland so a little older I think.
We have always had this problem with het but subject wise the other way round. She has had some fab teachers and the same one for the last 2 years. We have just accepted to a point that this is just the way she is and is a bit of a dreamer. She doesn't feel as captured by maths as she is by reading and writing so the teacher and I discussed strategies to help her focus.
The one we found worked the best was letting her set her own targets. Because maths was something dd doesn't feel comes naturally we wondered if she became a bit overwhelmed by being given x amount of sums to do so rather than say ok dd here's your work on you go. For homework and classwork we ask her how many of the sums do you think you can manage in the time. Sometimes she would say a tiny amount but the teacher says not to push for more just say ok then do your 3 and if you still have time carry on.

Putting the target in dd's hands made a huge difference and she never ever only did 3 sums or whatever she almost always completed all the work put in front of her. She began challenging herself more as the pressure wad taken off of her.
Every so often she slips back and we go back to her setting her own achievable targets.

Thanks for your reply. I have been stewing about this all day and I think I am going to go back to the school and ask to speak to the senco. I know a few of the other boys in his class have had extra help with reading because of their ability so I don't see why his lack of concentration shouldn't also be seen as a weak area that needs work?

They seem to be shrugging their shoulders and saying, oh well, that's just the way he is. I am desperate not to see him become one of those boys who just plods through school not that interested because he really is an imaginitive little soul and is always rally interested in whatever topic they are learning about.

Maybe I could get gareth malone to come and sort him out!

Definitely agree that the school shouldn't just be shrugging their shoulders.
We are extremely lucky at the school dc are at. I genuinely don't know what I would do if the current head ever left. If you look at attainment over the past 10 years you can actually see where she started their.
Both my dc have struggled in different ways and the school are amazing at trying to work together to find a solution.
In your situation they really should be trying to find something that works for him and helping him focus his imagination. The teacher obviously isn't succeeding in capturing it somehow.

And how good would Gareth Malone coming be. I've thought that myself watching him.
