Dear DS's teacher
If you ask 5 year olds what they want to be when they growup and my son says an "eco warrior" don't tell him "thats not a word". It is a word, maybe not one you were expecting but it is, and he knows exactly what it means. Just once, just fucking once could you encourage him a little in his imagination/passions.

And breathe .... and yes I have ishoos with my DS's teachers

She might have said/meant its not a job.

SeoraeMaeul · 24/02/2012 04:21

I agree and in a calmer mind would probably accept it. But we've had so many instances where he's been upset about her dismissing something he says. She just seems to never encourage him. We moved in Sept and he was so miserable, I just feel like she's written him off as hard work.

Oh and she admits that what she said and in deed meant was that it wasn;t a word. Part of a larger discussion but that bit really just got me.

SeoraeMaeul - sorry to hear you are still having issues with your son's school. The teacher sounds like very hard work and I think your son's aspirations are fab, and she should not discourage them. It sounds like part of a wider problem though. Have you spoken to the school about what's going on?

SeoraeMaeul · 24/02/2012 07:01

Thanks eastendfareast The school's response is a sort of gaellic shrug, not that I'm surprised. So I think we're stuck with muddling through until the end of this year and hopefully the relationship with next years teacher will be better. I come across a couple of other families with older kids who appear to have been through something similar with this year. Just so frustrating.
How you doing? Will PM you.

So I take it that the teacher / school is not really into ECO issues then, otherwise there would be eco warriors in the school and an eco committee.

mrz · 24/02/2012 17:35

I once had a 5 year old in my class who wanted to be a mermaid when he grew up and another who wanted to be a lion so eco warrior seems a good option to me

LondonMumsie · 24/02/2012 17:41

When my primary school was inspected (when I was a child), one of my friends said he wanted to be a "rat" when he grew up... His dad had just left his mum, guess there was lots of "what a rat" talk at home.

Anyway, he now is a lovely fellow with a very glamorous job in LA.

Runoutofideas · 24/02/2012 17:53

I'm not sure they are generally called "eco-warriors" in school - our eco committee are called "eco-stars" which is maybe a bit less confrontational! I don't think your teacher should dismiss your son like that though - she doesn't sound very encouraging. BTW when my dd2 was asked in reception what she wanted to be, she replied "an elephant". Not sure what your teacher would have made of that!!

Northernlurker · 24/02/2012 18:09

Sympathy for the unencouraging teacher.I am not feeling the love for dd3's teacher atm. Bit better since Parents Evening when I pointed out how negative she and classroom assitant had been (I did it nicely) but still early days. Dd3 is in RECEPTION for heavens sake - if she can't enthuse now when will she?

Littlefish · 24/02/2012 19:40

I taught a child who wanted to be a police dog when she grew up. Grin

EmilyStrange · 24/02/2012 19:44

That teacher sounds like an idiot. What a lovely, clever answer.

cuppatea2 · 24/02/2012 19:52

the kids are 5, obviously an eco warrior is a very creditable career aspiration at any age, teacher should be teaching upper primary not recepetion/yr 1

jalapeno · 24/02/2012 20:07

They have ecowarriors at DS's school too so I would say it's a very sensible answer. DS at this age wanted to be a pirate, the one that fires the cannon. A bit younger and he wanted to be a big hairy spider.

Surely the whole point in asking 5-year olds what they want to be is hearing the funny answers? Are you sure she wasn't joking in a way that hasn't translated well? I find it hard to believe that she asked them expecting a serious answer, if she did she needs to lighten up.

I just asked my 3 year old and he wants to be Luigi (of SuperMario Brothers fame) Shock

RueDeWakening · 24/02/2012 21:09

DD (age 4, in Reception) wants to be a cow when she grows up :o

KTk9 · 24/02/2012 21:18

Silly teacher!!!!

My dd wanted to be a 'super pup' in reception, but two years on, decided that a vet may be more realistic!

QED · 24/02/2012 21:36

They have eco warriers at DCs school.

Plonker · 24/02/2012 21:38

One boy and one girl from each class get to be ecowarriors at dd's school!

I think it's a great aspiration.

My littlest dd is in Reception wants to be a toothfairy!
Your ds's teacher would just looooove my dd!

simpson · 24/02/2012 22:33

Plonker - my DD wants to be a tooth fairy too Grin

She is 4 and due to start school in sept.
