DD got taken to do extra maths work today as she is struggling and not understanding something, on asking her today she didnt even know the topic name, she knew it was in the Heinamann maths book, it was page 13 and it was to do with balloons and numbers, she had to find the number between numbers (in the 800's) according to her, she is 9 and in P4 but is a bit behind at her maths work, does anyone have any idea what maths topic she may be struggling with?

I do intend speaking to someone tomorrow but her teacher had some sort of breakdown last week and no idea when she will be back and she is currently getting between 3 and 6 teachers a day so the chances of speaking to someone is quite low!

Can you explain what you mean by P4?
I mean, I know what P4 means in terms of ability level in handling number, but given the activity you've described, I can't help but feel you're talking about something different.

P4 is Primary 4 (Scotland) which is equivalent to Y3 in England.

dd is also P4 but no longer uses The Heinemann maths books. She has been doing odd and even numbers, numbers to the nearest hundred, fractions, etc

I would imagine it was ordering and sequencing.

Which number would come between 807 and 809?

Put these numbers in order starting with the lowest? 816 869 838 891 801

??

Just had a look at dd's old NHM booklets and there is one entitled Numbers to 1000 : Ordering although p13 itself would n't match. Overall it looks at placing numbers in sequence and concepts such as identifying x more than or less than a specified number.

Sorry, primary 4! I think the book wasn't a pupils book but a teachers hand book! Dd has this amazing ability to over think, over analyse and over complicate things andi think this is a case of it! I think it could be with number sequences and number bonding.

Thanks

Ah! This is the second time in as many days that terminology from Scotland has caught me out!
I clearly need to do some reading.

Thanks for clearing that up ^^

It sounds like some worksheets ds1 did last year. They will have two numbers, say 815 and 842 with a space between. There will be a few other numbers listed eg. 810, 835, 845 and she needs to pick the one between the two listed.
