Works really well! Tear the edges of the paper first.Fold and refold. Helps the tea sink in! Put it on a tray and add water and drag a tea bag across!! Messy!! Drying is a bit tricky-if you can peg it on something or it will stick.

Good luck!

I have used unbleached baking parchment before and then randomly rubbed a used, squeezed teabag over it.

Draw the grid lines and island outline before tea dying for a smudged old look. Rub sand over the finished article, burn torn edges with a match. Roll up and tie with a ribbon!

For really adventurous touch try sealing wax, you can design a personal seal!

I have made them a few different ways.

1- tea stained

2- grilled (be careful!) then singe the edges

When I taught co-ordinates, I gave my class this paper: www.2020site.org/templates/images/treasure-map.jpg
far easier than having to mess around with tea/ grills!

I inserted the paper into Word, and then drew the co-ordinates on top.

when sealing with a blob of wax DO NOT ( as I once did age 11) leave the red candle burning while you have a bath, you find that it sets fire to your desk and only your dads quick action smothering it with your favourite jeans ( and ruining said jeans) prevents the curtains catching fire too.

Do include sea monsters or dragons.
and palm trees.

My DDs have used dark brown ink pads or dark brown wax crayons on the edges and round the torn bits to make them look a bit more aged.

DS used a soggy old teabag and then a few coffes granules sparingly sprinkle on the damp map to produce age spots. It looked really great, and I had to hold myself back from taking overjoining in (sighs - I should have been a Blue Peter presenter!).

taking over

jamdonut · 23/02/2012 16:40

I've done the match up the edge of a map before....but be careful! I very nearly burned the whole thing! Grin Blush

oooh! all interesting ideas coming here! i will try the coffee granules aged spots here too.

Having done this last weekend I recommend you treat the paper before drawing anything on it and if you can once they have drawn their map if they are going to do anything else to it then make a photocopy first. We ended up sending in the stained crusty version along side the plane photocopy so the teacher could actually see what was on the original map (as half had been obliterated by over exuberant DS) Grin

Black liner pens work well at outlining the writing, features as they stand out and look like old ink
