We are thinking of moving to the Yorkshire Coast (Dh's work).

Does anyone have any info or experience about these schools? Would be great to get some good mn insight.

Any insights good/bad/indifferent would be great.

TIA

P.S. This thread is everywhere as they are small/smallish schools so I need plenty of topic traffic to grab anyone with experience Grin

I know of a few people whose kids who go to Scarborough College. Apparently it is a good school. Don't know much more, because only moved to Yorkshire Coast from 'down south' 9 years ago. And my kids go to state schools, where they are very happy and making good progress.

Fyling Hall is quite a way out if Scarb itself I think closer to Whitby?) that's about all the help I can give! I am from Scarb originally and family still live there; state schools were always fairly good with Scarb college not bring much better, but things may well have changed! sorry, not helpful at all really.. Blush

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 17/02/2012 17:13

Apologies for terrible typos; I did actually go to school, despite the evidence! Grin

dontaskwhereIlive · 17/02/2012 17:35

Thanks for the information.

Any evidence of anyone actually living in that bit of the world is lovely Grin

Any imput on any schools would be great - state or indie.

Good your experience is positive jamdonut. Are they in schools in Scarborough or somewhere near?

Nearby East Yorks seaside town!...don't want to be too specific. Wink But am very happy with the schooling they (all 3) have received.

dandelionss · 19/02/2012 19:07

I have a distant cousin who goes to Scalby School. Her parents are both primary school teachers and they all seem very happy with it.
Also know a family whose girls are both starting at fylinghall in september, but that doesn't really help you much does it!

skybluepearl · 19/02/2012 21:30

Fyling Hall would be my bet. My good friend went to Scarborough College and enjoyed it though. Scalby, Raincliffe and Pinder are all a bit too mixed for my liking. Graham is one of the better state schools in Scarb.

skybluepearl · 19/02/2012 21:33

The Scarb State schools changed in popularity/results about 2005/6. Scalby ued to be the dogs bollocks but not now

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 19/02/2012 21:43

Yeah I was a scalby girl in the days when it got really good resultsGrin, but from what i can gather it's nowhere near as good now. Think Graham/raincliffe get the best results now.

BrianButterfield · 19/02/2012 21:46

Check the results tables carefully - some of the schools have been heavily using BTECs to improve their position in the league tables! Agree that Graham is a good school (never worked there but I know it well).

dontaskwhereIlive · 19/02/2012 22:28

Thanks everyone Smile

Skybluepearl - can I ask why Fyling Hall would be your bet? I'd be interested in opinions.

We will investigate Scalby and Graham - thank you. I'm really not too worried about actual school performance tables, but I am more interested in the expectations of the school and the 'ethos' if you see what I mean. Mine are a varied academic bunch, so I need all sorts of different things from schools Grin

My daughter is starting Scarborough College in September. I have lots of friends who have children in attendance here and all reports are good. The school has recently merged with Bramcote School (prep) which imho can only strengthen the school. I would defo recommend it!

3boys35 · 26/05/2012 09:05

Just seen this thread and hope its not too late! My 2 older boys go to Scarborough college and we couldn't be happier with it. Great pastoral support, extra curricular activities eg LAMBDA, sports, cooking etc. Very high expectations of academic achievements but not pushy. They children also get to join in with senior school activities and both boys were in The King and I recently. The merger with bramcote will just improve the school. The head is very dynamic!

I used to live in the area.

Fyling Hall - my friend thinks very highly of this school and wants to send her kids there. She thinks highly of the ethos and schools direction. It seems to be quite a special place. Great location too - Robinhoods Bay. Given the choice I would rather live Whitby or Robinhoods Bay direction. The countryside is so much more attractive.

Scarborough College. A different friend boarded at this school and it was fine. She came out extremely driven but struggled having a family of her own. The best Scarborough state school is Grahame. I know this because I know quite a few Scarborough teachers! Selby used to be the top school many moons ago while Raincliffe got swallowed up by Grahame. Pindar is in quite a rough area and there is always the smell of the McCains chip factory - ugh!

skirt · 31/05/2012 19:40

My eldest went to Graham and she's now doing a good degree at Manchester. My youngest is at Graham/Raincliffe Federation ( 2 schools merged and became upper and lower schools) and is thoroughly enjoying it and is achieving. I'm involved with school too.

Don't know much about Scarborough College except that another friend has just received a threat of redundancy notice from her job there.

pm me if you want any more info.

Digging up a very old thread here! Curious which you went for and your experience? Considering private options to escape the hell hole of the only available secondary school in my town. Also heard about Queen Ethelbergers, any reports of that please?

ethelredonagoodday · 25/01/2025 19:22

Queen Ethelbergas is on the Harrogate side of York so quite a distance from the other two.

NimbleLilacCat · 08/07/2025 12:04

Hi @Addled1 . Just seen your post from last term. My children are at Fyling Hall and I know people who have been to Scarborough College so have some idea of what it's like. One main difference is the size - both the school overall and class sizes. At Fyling Hall, the pupil/teacher ratio is great and they get great "value added" exam results i.e. everyone reaches or exceeds their potential. On the flip side, the larger classes/school size at Scarborough can be an advantage e.g. if your child is extremely sporty and wants a larger choice of sports to study. I would recommend visiting both as they have different ethos/values so it's a case of what suits you. We are over the moon with how our sons have got on at Fyling Hall and would 100% recommend.
