What's the best way to get hold of KS2 practice papers/questions

I know you can buy them in WH Smiths etc and on-line, but you generally get a set of one year's past papers, which is fine, but works out expensive if you want, say, to do one set per week. Is there a better way?

I really wouldn't bother. They are likely to be doing them at school.

You'd think wouldn't you, but his teacher has suggested it....

I thought the test was supposed to be of the school not the child. How is doing the teachers job for them going to help anyone?

forward · 16/02/2012 13:36

That is what the test is "supposed" to do, but the results are used for early streaming in secondary school. My own experience is that if you get put in a low set to begin with, it's much harder to move up than it is to stay in the set above, if that's where you ended up at the beginning

because that is one of those myths that keeps getting churned out Starlight but it doesn't mean it's true Wink

Seriously OP ...with very long tweezers Grin

StarlightDicKenzie · 16/02/2012 13:43

Oh yes now I come to think of it GCSE expected grades are based on them and therefore must set the expectations for secondary education.

StarlightDicKenzie · 16/02/2012 13:46

Oh well, perhaps I'll start hothousing my 3.5 year old after all. She's exceptionally bright Grin but doesn't read, write or do maths etc. formally ( although share out sweets unevenly and you'll bloody know about it) so perhaps it's time I taught her the formal stuff.

mrz · 16/02/2012 13:53

What do you mean she doesn't do maths!! evidence of higher order calculations Wink

StarlightDicKenzie · 16/02/2012 14:07

Grin She does know weird maths things like Neptune has 13 moons and how many stops there are from Leyton to Bank on the tube, but that's down to her ASD brother hothousing her, not me.

I suppose I assumed she was bright enough, could start learning the formal stuff from the teacher and would do well enough. Sounds like she might be overlooked if I don't start training her for her SATS. Sad

mrz · 16/02/2012 14:13

Leave it to her brother he's doing a fabulous job Smile

@ U 2.

whatstream · 16/02/2012 19:43

here:

emaths.co.uk/index.php/4-students/past-papers/ks2-sat-papers

very useful :)

they also have other past test/exam papers for practice too, all free, brilliant resource.

i made the mistake with dd1 of thinking that sats were to test the school, so i never gave it a thought - and she ended up in totally the wrong set at secondary - got her moved to the right one eventually but it was a bit traumatic.

not going to make that error with dc2, and would advise anyone to do the same :)

startail · 17/02/2012 00:06

Google St josephs' Sats
It takes you to the right page of the
St. Josephs' RC Primary School- Pickering North Yorkshire.

Sorry it often comes up first on Google because so many other parents don't want to spend money in Smiths.

You need to remember that this year's tests are going to be slightly different to previous years

whatstream · 19/02/2012 12:51

mrz in what way are this year's tests going to be different?

mrz · 19/02/2012 13:03

Key Changes:

? the English writing test will be replaced by a new writing skills test in 2013, interim teacher assessment arrangements have been put in place for the writing test for 2012; and

? Level 6 test scores will be included in the 2012 primary school performance tables.

How will pupils? writing be assessed in 2012?

Pupils? National Curriculum level for writing will be determined by a teacher assessed judgment of their work across Year 6. Teachers? judgments will be informed by and take account of (but not be limited by) the pupil?s result on a standard test that will be sent to schools earlier in the spring term.

The test can be administered by schools when they choose and then marked internally. Alternatively, schools may prefer to use the externally marked test in the Key Stage 2 test week (as in previous years).

In either case, the test result should only inform a teacher assessment judgment, not determine it. It is solely the teacher assessment in writing (and not the test result) that will be published, that will contribute towards an overall English National Curriculum level and that will be used for accountability purposes.
