Anyone know that there was a uniform survey going on? Have I missed the boat, did anyone out there comment?

Have just received a letter from our head about DD not wearing one of their disgusting overpriced logo'd cardigans ( we've been holding out while she wears out her lovely M and S cardigan -he he good they are so long lived!) was trawling internet and found this article (sadly undated). Really hoping that some of you -Mumsnetters were quicker off the mark than me given the comments we have all made?

OFT to update school uniforms study

We will update our survey of the supply of uniforms in UK schools in early 2012. The survey will gather up-to-date information on how state schools source their uniforms. In particular, we will assess whether the findings from the 2006 survey are still valid. These findings and other information on the 2006 study are set out below

Specifically, the OFT wishes to assess the impact of sole supply agreements on prices for school uniforms. As noted below, we have worked with the Department for Education (DfE) previously to highlight the issue and to encourage school governors and other decision makers in state schools to avoid sole supply agreements as far as possible. We would like to encourage schools to remove remaining restrictions to the supply of their uniforms and to introduce competition into the supply process wherever possible. We feel that this message is particularly important at this time, where many parents are facing economic difficulties. We consider that permitting parents to source all items of uniform, even those carrying the school logo, from a wider range of outlets would result in a lower price for those items.

We would welcome the views of parents, schools and participants about the supply of school uniforms. If you wish to provide views, please address correspondence to:

Maybe I should start a business taking in sewing in anticipation of some changes. I'm not flash, but I can sew a 1pound badge onto a 3 for 2 pounds polo shirt and manage not to charge over 4 pounds for the pleasure. For 27 pounds I would at least want to have some sleeves, that is mad.

maggiepy · 12/02/2012 19:30

Yes I wd want sleeves in lambswool at that price. Definitely OTT.

Sorry, maggiepy, didn't mean to hijack and I do agree with you. If a school insists on uniform, they shouldn't also insist on a single supplier!

maggiepy · 13/02/2012 22:47

No worries, gallicgreetings, its such a big subject close to a lot of our hearts isn't it.

Sadly I am sending DD to school next week in a logo'd crap quality cardigan -passed down from a friend tho' so at least I haven't had to succumb and buy it from the school office and in theory am still upholding my refusal to do so. Only thing is, she's got 18 months to go and if the horrible thing lasts that long, the arms will be 6 inches too short and she will be showing off her midriff if I don't cave in.

No idea what punishment the head had in store for DD as he didn't say in his letter but its not fair to continue to make my point via her any more (even though her thoughts are the same as mine). Going to try and keep pushing for change, its just not right.

Hello again. When my dd was at primary, the school uniform was navy. Apparently. But still i would see girls in grey skirts and nothing seemed to be said. It really annoyed me but that is another matter. Dd's school had a sweatshirt with a logo on which they could wear with a white or blue polo shirt or a white or blue shirt/blouse and tie. I have never liked polo shirts and sweatshirts and dd never liked them even at 4 so wore white blouse, tie and navy cardigan which was an approved alternative, thank goodness. Cardigans and blouses were m&s and always looked smart and MILES better than the sweatshirts that looked faded and too tight after one wash. Even had to have a school logo pe t shirt which but that looked smart so that was ok. Shorts horrible so didn't bother. And school bag with logo but that was needed so ok there. Now dd at high school, there is only one stockist for her uniform with logos on. I asked about buying the badges to sew on myself and was told that this isn't done anymore and the badges are no longer available to buy on their own. So there really isn't a choice, is there?

maggiepy · 14/02/2012 11:14

No, there seems to be no choice for so many of us parents despite all the guidance notes and policies on uniform saying there should be. What a waste of us taxpayers money all that is.

It is not just that a head and his (mostly unelected by parents) governors dictate how we spend money and give us no choice. I also thought that fundraising (as we have to call it when they profit from selling uniform) by schools was supposed to be voluntary. If we have to buy from them perhaps they should soften the blow by removing the profit... oops fundraising... element.

DS and DD's school has introduced iron-on emblems as part of the school uniform. The badges cost us £1 and we put them on ASDA sweatshirts and polos.

The company that supplies them is easily googled "iron on school badges"

maggiepy · 20/02/2012 14:26

Thanks NickL -glad your school do this, it must be nice to have choice of clothing. Will look up the info and pass it on to our school altho' as I said before.. head and brick wall....
