Reception - how often are books changed at your school?

Just out of interest?

And before I get roasted alive, I do know that it doesn't matter and we can get them out of the library. But I'm starting to have issues with the lack of initiative and, well, any kind of trying at DD's school. I think the infrequency of book changing is one symptom of this, but want to make sure my expectations are not unreasonable.

To give you an idea, they are supposed to be changed every week, but our record so far is 2.5 weeks.

Monday, wednesday, Friday. As long as we remember to put previous book in the book changing box.

Thanks everyone. And SharkBite, I think you're absolutely right, I need to go in saying how can we help witn this. But it's also a sign of a more general malaise - the school sent a note round last term practically apologising for the fact that they were going to start setting targets for all the children.

They are a lovely, kind well-meaning school; but I sometimes think they spend so much time being nice to the children that they forget they need to educate them too.

DD's school change her book every day and she also gets a school library book every Friday. She does one to one reading every day with a parent helper and with the TA or Teacher at least twice a week. Quite often, she will read one book at school and bring another one home, so she is essentially reading two books a day. DD's school relies heavily on parent helpers, of which there are quite a few. I am also a parent helper for reading in another class. I think the school would be grateful for volunteers to help with things like reading and you should definitely suggest it.

In the infants, every week or more often if requested. They get 5 a week.

In the juniors, every week or they can go before school any day and change them themselves.

You need to check the procedure at your school, at ours you have to write that the book has been finished in their reading record, then THE CHILD has to put the book and reading record in a tray and it is changed. This encourages the kids to get into a routine and take responsibility for a little something in their school life.

Library book once a week, which is fine as we have oodles of books at home.
Reading book once a week, though I'd like it to be more often.

Voidka · 10/02/2012 16:13

Once a week - DS is still looking at books with no pictures and is absolutely not interested so I end up reading it to myself.

lynniep · 10/02/2012 16:22

each of the kids in reception is allocated their 'book swap' day. DS1s is currently Monday.
They are given two books, once to read themselves, and one for us to read to them. We also have to fill in their red reading books to let the teacher know how the kids are getting on (the reading books also have their letters/words/sounds to that week in them). These go back with DS1 on Mondays, and new books and comments come back after school on Monday.

Its working well so far. They are adjusting his books to his reading levels based on my comments. He has a shedload of books at home to read as well cos he bores of the school ones quickly and they have a limited supply (he loves the DK readers - they have a large selection of Star Wars books and he's allowed one each night - some he reads to us and the more difficult ones we read to him - the local library has lots!)

MissBetsyTrotwood · 10/02/2012 21:24

Once a week but he gets two books swapped at a time.

jubilee10 · 10/02/2012 21:32

Once a week.

MegBusset · 10/02/2012 21:35

Library books - once a week (two at a time). I also go to the public library once a week so we have books coming out of our ears.
They don't send home reading books until Y1.

Turniphead1 · 10/02/2012 21:55

Every day at our infant school. Reading book & story book.

Maro11 · 11/02/2012 09:19

reading book twice a week as long as the child had read and understood the story. Library book changed each Wednesday and a couple of books from the "book corner" each day

LJBrownie · 11/02/2012 14:13

Ours are changed once a week when DD does one-to-one reading with the teacher/ta. We just read different books at home from the library etc but I wouldn't say we have a new one every day through doing that and i don't think it is necessary. My husband is a teacher and feels very strongly about the feeling that some parents seem to exhibit that learning in early years is a race to get through books and levels - it really isn't necessary in our view... I wouldn't read too much into the number of times books are changed as a measure of a good school for reception but I get the feeling that in mn world it is a badge of honour to have high-frequency book-changing Smile

Haberdashery · 11/02/2012 16:54

DD gets her own reading books once a week. She gets three, which seems a manageable number as she's often very tired in the evenings. She also gets a book that she chooses herself from the library, which is often easy enough for her to read herself - this extra book can be changed as often as she wants to change it as the Reception library area is just outside the classrooms.

jo164 · 11/02/2012 22:28

My daughter gets 2 new books every day in reception! It started off at 1 every day but as she has got better they send home 2. They only take a couple of minutes to read, and her teacher listens to them all read every day.

ballstoit · 11/02/2012 22:35

Last term (when DD had a supply teacher for the whole term as class teacher off long term sick), the books were being changed 2 or 3 times a week, with 2 books being given at a time.

Since class teacher returned after Christmas, DD has had 2 books. I have been giving teacher a chance to settle back in before moaning, but having read this, will be making appointment with Foundation Co-Ordinator after half term.

acsec · 11/02/2012 22:40

As a Reception class teacher I and my TA's aim to hear every child 3 times a week and change their reading book when they have read. Try to change library books weekly but can get forgotten about, luckily I often have a mum to help change library books.

JsOtherHalf · 12/02/2012 10:19

Homework is once a week here, 6 words to read and one very simple book. We read at home most days too.
