Really silly question for mums of kids in private schools

I had to name change as I can't bear for anyone to realise how so silly I am. I expect to be bashed a lot but please I really need advise/ reassurance.

My dc are starting at a private school in September, due to work, dh and I won't be able to do the school runs, a relative would be picking them up and bringing them home on the bus.

As we have no experience on private schooled kids, I assume most kids Would be picked in fancy cars and all. I'm just wondering if my kids would feel inferior for having to walk all the way t the bus stop to take the bus, or if the other kids would make fun of them. One of my dc's is quite self conscious and we're working on that. The other is more confident and wouldn't bother one bit.

I'm just after some reassurance that my kids won't be the only ones walking to the bus stop after school!

Thanks.

Weird. I have absolutely no idea why that was deleted (never been deleted before).

At our fancy private school the vast majority go by bus or train and the rest that come by car there are a fair few that are very battered.

NormanTebbit · 11/02/2012 21:25

I have never seen a battered old car drop kids off at our private school. This all 4x4's, Audis ,Mercedes, Beamers. They also have school buses. Not many on public transport.

bringbacksideburns · 11/02/2012 22:50

No one on a bike then Norman?

Sorry, couldn't resist Grin

My sons' prep actively encourages walking, public transport etc as it is working on being an ecoschool. Also massive Chelsea Tractors are a bugger to park in London.

We use a combination of train and bus.

Edith- the other thread was deleted. Severe sense of humour failure by the Powers that Be!

DD is at a fee-paying school, which is near the centre of a large city. I drive a small frequently muddy car. Every kind of car is evident in the school yard from the latest Merc or Beemer to the completely clapped out. Many pupils walk to school, many take the bus (only possible if not right out in the sticks), some cycle. Fee paying schools have every kind of parent from the family where a grandparent scrubs floors at 6am to help with the fees, to the patrician (some broke, some rich), to the new-money-wealthy and everything in between. Most important is that your DC are happy, make friends and progress in their learning.

seeker yes, I've seen the other vanished (couldn't predict that would happen when I linked) on the grounds that it was a thread about a thread.

Iamnotminterested · 12/02/2012 10:33

seeker, edith, what's happened?

Chelseatina · 12/02/2012 10:40

How a child travels to and from any school is really irrelevant to their peers. As for parents having the time to check out other parents' modes of transport - it is not happening - they are pretty busy with their own lives and ferrying child or children around hastily... OP - don't worry about it!

My niece is in a private school, (2nd to last year in primary so not sure what year that is) she gets the local bus to and from school with her friends ...

Forrestgump · 13/02/2012 10:59

At my childrens school, there are lots of super posh cars, but there are equally many not so posh. some children walk, and there are a few that also arrive by busses. (the school provide a bus run)

TalkinPeace2 · 13/02/2012 14:59

in my class at my junior school I was dropped of from my mums pushbike on her way to work, others came by bus or by car, only one family had a chauffeur driven rolls

stealthsquiggle · 13/02/2012 15:07

Huge selection of cars - lots of Bentleys / Astons / etc, especially on sports/speech/whatever day when there are more fathers there. Lots of SAHMs with Rangerover Evoques - and lots of "normal" people with "normal" cars (10yo Fiestas and the like) and, as someone else said, lots of "vintage" (falling apart) Defenders. Also a school mini bus that does pickups and lots of lift sharing. About the only option that doesn't happen at DC's school is walking (apart from the DC of staff who live on site) and public buses - because it is miles from anywhere and there are no buses Grin

betterwhenthesunshines · 16/02/2012 19:09

I wouldn't worry about the type of car. But you do need to have a chauffeur driving it for you. And make sure he always sits on the yellow line blocking the road so no one else who usees their FEET can even cross the road safely...

...BTW the above does happen at our school, but there are also plenty of normal people too!
