How does your school "release" Reception and P1 children at the end of the day?

There have been a few issues recently with children being left in the playground when no one was there to collect them.

I raised the issue with the school when it happened to DS as I was concerned. It happened again to another child last week.

DS goes to after school club but that day they didn't collect him - he was found wandering around the playground by another parent who took him to the head teacher.

Then last week a child was not collected so the parent of another child took him in her car until someone came.

I am concerned that the children are simply let out into the playground as I had understood that the teacher was checking that there was someone there to collect them.

What is the usual practice?

at ds1's first school, and at his current school they are let out one by one, and only if their parent/carer is waiting

stealthsquiggle · 07/02/2012 23:34

Let out one by one to waiting parent/carer here.

startail · 07/02/2012 23:49

Infants teachers stand by the doors and the children are only allowed out if there is someone to collect them.
Y3 and above mill about outside school and generally locate their own parents.

LanceCorporalBoiledEgg · 08/02/2012 00:23

What the others said.

Uncollected children are taken into the office to be looked after until someone comes (I only know this because I was once late Blush).

LanceCorporalBoiledEgg · 08/02/2012 00:26

Children who go to after school club are picked up from the classroom by the after school staff and therefore never leave the building.

The after school club have a register so missing children would be noticed.

Wouldn't be happy about reception children wondering around the playground on their own :(

GingerSnapsBack · 08/02/2012 01:01

At the school nursery (scotland) they have a secure door and you have to go in and sign your child in and out and the p1s come out one by one when the ta can see the parent. They are never left on their own that's shocking!

VelcroFanjo · 08/02/2012 01:04

Reception are collected from the class by the parents, year 1 line up at the door and let out if the parent is visable by the teacher. It is only in year 3 (7-8yo) that they are not supervised.

Dustinthewind · 08/02/2012 01:04

Whole of KS1, eye contact with known collector required before release.

The children sit on the carpet. Teacher by the classroom door. Children don't leave the carpet until the teacher has seen their collector is waiting and called out their name, then they can stand up and come out of the classroom.

TwoPinkShoes · 08/02/2012 06:29

Parents of young children go to the classrooms, wait outside and each child is handed over individually. If they go to after school care, you sign for them - a bit like a parcel Grin.

Year 4 and above can leave on their own to walk home, get a bus, etc. But that's indicated on a permission slip parents sign at the start of the year.:

I am horrified by several things in this post! There are faults with the supervision procedures for the childcare provider (because the transfer of children into its care is not being supervised properly) and your child?s school (because it is responsible for ensuring that children are transferred from its care into the care of the right responsible adult). Who has responsibility for the collection and transfer to childcare? You said ?they didn?t collect him? but do you pay a third party (child-minder, taxi etc) to do it, or does the care provider send a member of staff? You?ve said that you have raised the problem that happened to your DS with the school ? how? Was it verbally or in writing? In your position, I would be arranging a meeting with both the school and the childcare provider at the same time to get them to agree with you what the arrangements are, who is responsible for which bit, and what the procedure will be when something goes wrong. Ask them both to provide you with a copy of the relevant policies. There is a wider issue at the school, but I would deal with that separately.

jamdonut · 08/02/2012 07:32

Foundation only let out to parents if someone there.
KS1 - Taken to playground, but not let go until someone makes themselves known to us that they are there to collect. We have to know, BEFORE the end of school, and preferably in writing, if they are going with someone different, or an older child collecting.
LKS2 - taken to the playground. Encouraged to tell us that there is someone there to meet them. They are allowed to walk by themselves ONLY if we have had it in writing from parent/carer
UKS2 - are allowed to go by themselves.

We wait in the playground till all children gone. Any left over are rounded up and taken to wait at the office, and the parents have to collect them from there. The office rings their contact numbers to see if someone is coming for them.

fuzzPigwickPapers · 08/02/2012 07:36

DCs line up in the classroom, only let out when the parent is spotted.

If somebody else is picking up we need to let the teacher know in advance.

fuzzPigwickPapers · 08/02/2012 07:37

I think it's the same with yr1/2 as well.

jamdonut · 08/02/2012 07:37

Oh and after school club - staff wait in corridor nearest the club (which is in an outside building), and the children meet them there...also they have a register, so they know who to expect.

Lougle · 08/02/2012 07:45

Children sit on the mat. Teacher glances out of windows and calls names according to which parents she has seen.

Teacher opens door, and puts her hand on each child to guide them in general direction of parent.

Any child who has queued up when the teacher hasn't seen parent is moved to one side.

Children without collectors go back into classroom until they arrive.

Ladygahgah · 08/02/2012 07:49

Ours are all let out at once. Teachers do come out to have a quick look too. However there is not always a parent there. One mum in particular is late about 3 times a week! And I am often left waiting in the playground with her child. I find it infuriating. Last time I told him he would have to go and find a teacher, ask physically had to be elsewhere and could not wait with him. DS is in p1 and I think the teachers should only release them when someone is there to collect them

exoticfruits · 08/02/2012 07:58

As a supply teacher every single school that I went to in KS1 kept the DC until they saw the person collecting. Either they sat on the carpet and the TA called the DC or they lined up at the door and I asked each one to show me who was collecting and if they couldn't see the person they stayed by me and I went on to the next DC.
All KS2 DCs went out by themselves and knew to go to the office if there was no one there.

MissAnnersley · 08/02/2012 07:58

I'm in Scotland. DS has always just been 'released' into the playground and then it is the parents' responsibility to take over (or childminder).

I think most schools around here are the same. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but it's the way it is.

I was pretty surprised when I joined MN and read that children are 'handed over' on a one to one basis.

I think it will depend what your individual school does. Perhaps have a word with the school to check your understanding of their procedure is correct.

Seona1973 · 08/02/2012 08:30

ds is in P1 and the teacher comes out with them. The children are told to go if they see a parent/carer and to go back to the teacher if no-one is there for them yet. They can be collected from the office area if you are running late. P1 and P2 come out of the doors at the office and P3 onwards are let out into the main playground and then come out of the main gates.

lou231179 · 08/02/2012 08:37

At my DS's school, they release them one by one once they see a parent/carer, they do this from YR-Y2. There is no junior school at his school so not sure what happens there.

I am shocked that some infant schools let the children out on their own.

Choclatespread · 08/02/2012 09:34

That's really shocking, I would have a word with the HT regarding this.

At my child school reception are let out by the teacher once the parent can be seen.

After school club children are collected by someone.
Y3 are allowed to go by themselves if a letter of consent is given to the office. Otherwise the teacher waits by the door until they can see the parent.

ShowOfUmblestAnds · 08/02/2012 09:42

Same as others. DD is in reception and they line up by the gate, each one released in turn if the parent is there. If not, they're moved to one side and put in a cage until the parent schleps up. Then they release the caged children.

lancaster · 08/02/2012 10:05

also in Scotland and the P1 children are just released in to the playground and expected to make their way back to the teacher if no one there to collect them. Also when my sister was picking DS up for me last week she made a big point of letting his teacher know at the start of the day but in reality I don't think anyone would have noticed.
