How much space per ks2 child?

I know there is no upper limit to class sizes in ks2 but thought there was a space limit. Ie each child must have x square meters each. Does anyone know what this figure is? Does it count for just the classroom or do they take the floor space for the whole school? A friend is being pressured to have 37 in her mixed age class and i dont think she can fit them in let alone how she is going to be able to teach that many!

There is an upper limit, I believe its 40. I have never heard of their being a space limit. I've seen classrooms with 39 in - 2 teachers though so teaching must have been easier.

But 37 is an awful lot with 1 teacher. She should stand her ground and say that more children would be detrimental to learning.

The School Standards and Framework Act 1998 placed a duty on local authorities and schools to limit the size of infant classes for five-, six-, and seven-year-olds taught by one teacher to 30 or fewer pupils. The limit became a statutory responsibility on local authorities and schools from September 2001, the start of the 2001/02 school year.
There is no upper class size for children aged eight to 11.

I didn't think there was an upper limit for KS2 either - a teacher at our school once made a comment about it, something along the lines of x amount of space per child at KS1 but you can squash as many as you like into a broom cupboard in KS2!

The minimum size for a "new" build classroom in both KS1 and KS2 is considered to be 56 sq metres for 30 pupils, so on that basis 69 sq metres would be an appropriate size for 37. However this is not a legal requirement, just the building requirements and most "older" classrooms were built to 49 sq metres for the 30 pupils.
Obviously any pupils with mobility issues would be severely compromised with so many in the classroom as would having more adults in the classroom.
