How to help with number bonds without him noticing

DD needs some help with number bonds.

She refuses to do anything at home that even approaches maths or school work, which is fair enough as she already does reading and spellings.

Are there any games that are good for number bonds? Or ways to incorporate it into every day.

Short of making lots of v large cakes with 10oz of everything, I'm a bit stumped.

Hula Hoops on fingers?
I have 3 Hula Hoops on my fingers so 7 fingers without.

there is a dice game on amazon.co.uk called "shut the box". Basically they try to get all of the numbers "closed" by rolling the dice but, if they get a number more than once, they have to come up with bonds in order to keep playing. My daughter really likes it. We have competitions to see how many we can get before we can't go anymore.

In www.topmarks.co.uk under addition/subtraction there is Alian Addition and Maths Lines, 2 games to use number bonds.

I just checked the link and noticed that you have to press Games and then Addition/Substraction.

Sorry, I have it on my favourates.

Oh gosh, my spelling!

Great idea for a thread OP! My DS is the same, very set against anything resembling school work but begrudgingly does his reading book.

Those games are great gabid, going to let DS have a go on number line one later. Smile

If anyone can think of anything similar regarding times tables (he needs to learn 2s at the mo) I'd appreciate any tips. Hope you don't mind me asking on your thread op.

A tip I saw on here for number bonds was threading cotton reels (or beads etc) onto a thread then moving one across at a time to see how two groups can keep equalling the same number.

Do you have an IPad - there are great games on there. I think dd's favourite was squeebles.

Pack of cards, take out the picture cards and the 10s, play snap.
ie: it's a snap if they add up to 10.

generousoffer · 07/02/2012 17:11

These are great ideas, thank you.

I reckon that snap is the 'big boys' version Wink
Off to google (and find some cards).

I use this bingo game in school.

boredandrestless - google Timez Attack for times tabels, its a game where you have to guide a little man through a castle, open doors and overpower a monster.

Sandalwood · 08/02/2012 13:15

Oh and while you've got the cards out for snap - you can do 'pairs': you know when the cards are face down and you turn them in turn to find a matching pair - except you try and find 2 that add up to 10.

soozejukes · 21/02/2012 13:24

There is a number bond song that can teach her the bonds up to ten.

9 and 1 add up to 10
So do 8 and 2
7 and 3
6 and 4
5 and 5 do too.

Sing to tune of row row row your boat. Hope this helps.
