EYFS question for YR child - does it being scrapped affect this year cohort?

DD is in reception and I am aware from reading mumsnet that the EYFS is being scrapped.
However, will she still be scored on it for this educational year? (NB I am not stressing over what number she scores before anyone hounds me)

If so, can someone help me with a couple of questions?

What does (in PS,R,N) the phrase
'Uses developing mathematical ideas and methods to solve practical problems' mean?

Can anyone give me some specific things that demonstrate these capabilities? I find it a bit vague. Across all three strands would be marvellous!

Also, in reading, is it as simple as ORT book bands have me believe? She is reading ORT blue, which is in NC level 1, so assuming she achieves all the other points up to 8, would this be a 9 ?

Not sure about the EYFS

owever, no the reading levels do not equate to National Curriculum levels. They go no higher than 7 (or 8) in total, and that's all the way through to year 9 at secondary school, before they start GCSE exams.

Here is a useful chart mrz posted a week or so ago

bookbands and the national curriculum

I didn't know it wad being scrapped, interesting! link, please?

StealthPolarBear · 05/02/2012 17:23

it's being scrapped? First I have heard

MigratingCoconuts · 05/02/2012 17:24

By 'they' I mean the National Curriculum!

Each National Curriculum level is sub divided into three further levels, a,b, and c.

so 1c is lower than 1b and the highest is 1a.

lesstalkmoreaction · 05/02/2012 17:25

Its not being scrapped, its being reformed from september 2012.
Development will still be charted from birth to age 5

mrz · 05/02/2012 17:29

EYFS isn't being scrapped and it isn't changing that much either.
Personally I wouldn't award an 8 or 9 on the profile for blue band (or for any reading scheme book)

Lareine · 05/02/2012 17:44

thanks - not scrapped then!

Can anyone help on the maths question?

I didn't think the ORT could possibly be that simple!

migrating, now offically confused, the link you posted is similar to something I saw which shows the books and the national curriculum level 1 .

The books currently being read by DD are on this page of your link under the heading National Curriculum level 1 (I'm not going to go into abc). That's what made me think it was simple.

Going by mumsnet research into EYFS, a 9 is for someone working beyond EYFS goals. This is basically my question - surely her reading is beyond EYFS goals.
I am probably asking for the earth which isn't acheiveable with a yes or no! Too many maybes !

I'm sorry...I have ask.

Why does it matter Confused

My ds is in reception and I pleased he is settled, happy and beginning to blend his phonics well.

mrz · 05/02/2012 18:04

It is only a very rough guide. The books are at that level but in order for the child to be considered to be reading at that level they need to demonstrate a whole range of skills not just read the words and answer a few questions.

What books does he read independently from choice (not reading scheme books)

An example of the PSRN point would be there are 4 apples at the snack table but 8 children so if a child suggested cutting the apples in half they would be demonstrating the point ... if they had a bag of sweets, raisins, cheerios they could share them equally with the class and use mathematical language to explain what they are doing and why.

mrz · 05/02/2012 18:05

she not he

mrz · 05/02/2012 18:06

A child must demonstrate it independently in their daily activity not in teacher led sessions.

nomoreparties · 05/02/2012 18:10

DD and DS were both on blue band at the end of Reception. DD got 8s in the "reading" areas, DS got 5s.

mrz · 05/02/2012 18:15

It depends on the child's reading behaviour not the colour of the book

Lareine · 05/02/2012 18:21

thank you for the maths mrz - exactly what I was after.

migrating - it doesn't particularly matter, but I am a working mum so find it hard to speak to teacher. Hence I second guess everything from searching mumsnet!

She loves school! Very happy child and therefore happy mum.

mrz - she has just realised she can read her own books a little and did very well with Oh Dear yesterday. Of course, she prefers me to read to her!

psrn stands for 'problem solving, reasoning and numeracy' - it's one of the learning goal strands within the EYFS.

MigratingCoconuts · 05/02/2012 18:30

so am I and neither can I!

I'm just interested as our school do not routinely report any level until year 2 (late on at that). Its all reported as descriptions of what they can do and how they are settling, with increasing reference to 'below, on or exceeding expectations' throughout year 1.

so I have been far more focussed on how my ds is coping with adapting to school life really.

Lareine · 05/02/2012 18:33

our school has slipped right down ofsted ratings of late, and their sats have dramatically sunk too.
Still happy with the school, but just want to keep an eye on things if I can.
Mumsnet is great for clarification on this sort of thing.

that sounds right poncey as DD is in YR Grin

OP posts:
mrz · 05/02/2012 18:34

PSRN is one of the six curriculum areas in EYFS it has 3 strand numbers as labels and for counting, calculation and shape, space and measuring each have 9 profile scale points (5 in each strand being early learning goals)

Lareine then she isn't working at scale point 8 or 9

MigratingCoconuts · 05/02/2012 18:41

that makes sense Lariene..I'd do the same Grin
