Heroes and Heroines from history. Who would you want your 5yo to learn about?

We can chose anyone we like. It does not have to be from British history really but I would like to try to keep it contained las locally as possible so it is relevant. So, Devon ideally, but not limited to Devon or UK. And ideally relatively new history, so we can relate it to a time frame she might grasp, like in her granny's lifetime.

I am struggling to come up with something .

DH said John Lennon.

Any more?!

To a 5 year old a pirate is a bit more exciting than someone in a band you are too young to remember IMHO

Saltire · 05/02/2012 17:43

PavlovtheCat · 05/02/2012 17:45

Within the last 100 years? What about Elizabeth Boyes-Lyones (or however its spelt - the Queen mum).
She stayed in London during the blitz and visited the East End when it was a bomb site. She never expected to be in the public eye, but took her responsibilities very seriously.

MrsMcEnroe · 05/02/2012 17:47

PavlovtheCat · 05/02/2012 19:24

Ooooh grace darling looks like a good one! The queen has been done already, but queen mum could be a good one.

Diana is quite a good one. One that Dh and I remember from our own lives so very recent.

Not local but I'd like DD to know about

Florence Nightingale
Marie Curie
Amy Johnson (early aviator)
Helen Keller (high achiever despte beng deaf and blind)

Also Odette Churchill - spy durng world war 2

I do think girls should learn about women who pushed the boundaries. There are lots of men of course

PavlovtheCat · 05/02/2012 19:32

We have done Florence nightingale. I have been looking at Helen Keller actually. Marie curie bit close for comfort due to personal experience.

Shirley Temple? As a 5 yo girl? Not local obviously, but might be of interest as she was famous as a child.

What about Judith Kerr? (Mog books/Tiger who came to tea) DOn't know where she currently lives though.

jalapeno · 05/02/2012 20:22

My 6yo has just been learning about space and told me all about Neil Armstrong and Yuri Gagarin with great pleasure. Not very Devon-based but very interesting...how about the chap with the big moustache that has the farm on "it's not easy being green"? Was that in Devon? He's quite heroic in an environmental sense and they did lots of cool stuff like the eco diesel from old chip fat!

attheendoftheday · 05/02/2012 21:26

If you've done Florence Nightingale, you should definitely do Mary Seacole - also a nurse, same era, undertook far more dangerous and beneficial care of the wounded, forgotten by history because she was black.

Oh, and did you know that Florence Nightingale invented the pie chart?
