L3 KS1 SATs; How does a parent judge progress in Y3 if the sub-levels were not given?

That's basically it. My DC's school does not report sub-levels to parents, hence I have no way of knowing what progress has been made at the next parents evening. ie I may be told that child is a 3a in writing; What I do not know is that child may have been a 3a in writing in y2. Do you see my point? Is it OK to ask for KS1 sub-levels at parents evening so that I can judge progress? I understand the y3 "dip"/not much progress made in the first term stuff. Thanks.

We didn't know the sublevels in the SATS, but have just been given them (voluntarily) at parent's evening. So I know DS's gone up a sublevel in all subjects.

You may be given them at parent's evening.

The trouble is if a L3 is given at KS1 then it is just that - no sublevels. Unfortunately it is counted as a L3b, but most of the time unless the child is friend gifted they are a L3c because for a start they generally haven't covered a lot of the L3 curriculum.

Not in our LEA. We are only allowed to award level 3 if it's a secure 3b, and reckon when I questioned it that it's DFE orders. Not sure how come some LEAs manage to ignore this then Hmm

Friend? Grrr phone!!!! Meant truly! Feenie I wish I worked in your LEA! Even had an infant teacher admit that if a child got a L3 in the test then they were awarded it even though they knew they'd only got it because of shape & space!

Same for my authority, a Level 3 at KS1 goes down as a 3B. It means our Year 2 teachers are fairly cautious at awarding a level 3-the test is unimportant as it is only a small piece of evidence, the child HAS to be working consistently at level 3B for a 3 to be awarded.
When some children move in from out of the area ( especially from an area where there are infant/junior schools rather than primary!) we despair of some of the supposed Level 3's!

It isn't a standard instruction Feenie ... there is a thread on TES at the moment and a number of teachers are saying they can award a level 3 for a 3C.

Feenie · 04/02/2012 12:36

Hence my Hmm face. The guy from our authority was very firm about it, and said they were just following precise instructions regarding the award of a secure level 3. I doubt this is really the case if other LEAs are allowed to award 3cs willy nilly. Grin

We can certainly award level 3 to 3cs in my authority.

As regards infant school inflation of levels - we (how's this for luck?) had three children join from two different infant schools at the end of last year who had been reported at 2c for writing. I took examples of all their written work to a moderation meeting, and all were 'officially' moderated at 1b! There is work to do before Y6! Smile

Can't you tell at home? Just by seeing for yourself how they've changed in the last 6-8 months?
