DD, SENCO and Maths troubles!

Sorry, thread title probably a bit misleading but didn't know what to write!

Dd, year 3, is having a tough year. At parents evening in Oct/Nov teacher was really negative and basically said she didn't know what to do with Dd who is clearly capable but doesn't produce in class (teachers words). She has referred to SENCO (although no one can give me a definitive reason why, just 'to see' ). SENCO appt coming up soon it seems as DD told me yesterday that her teacher has said that dd has to go and see Miss X. Not worried and will be interested to see what it comes up with.

Anyway, this week apparently they have been doing maths tests which are different to their normal ones (optional SATS I think). DD tells me she got a 2C which is rather worrying when she got a 2B last year and her lasts year teacher said she was capable of more. Anyway, her teacher says to her that she thinks it is because DD likes the harder work more as is bored of the easy work (all true and last years teacher let her do the harder work as well). No idea what to think about all this now - is DD not being challenged (certainly don't think she is, especially in maths) and if not, why not, when by admittion of the teacher, she knows DD can do it?

Not sure what I'm trying to get out of writing this post other than any ideas what I could do to help sort this? DD is very reluctant to do work at home although we do some anyway. Mentioned getting her a tutor this morning which she doesn't want and then proceeded to get 18/20 on her weekly maths test which shows she can when she wants to.

Sorry for long winded post!

Thanks.

Getting a 2c in one test, when she got a 2b a few months ago is not that bad.

I think you really need to understand though what the nature of her difficulties are in class.

She doesn't need to do extra work at home - she needs to do the work in class.

Do you have any clue as to why she doesn't work in class?

Thanks for your reply.

I don't know what her difficulties are to be honest. She is very reluctant to go to school almost every day. She has not been like this is any other year. I don't think the teacher is really engaging with dd at all. Dd says she likes her teacher and she is her favourite one, but from what I can see, she doesn't push dd or engage with her particularly. Dd does need to e pushed. She needs a challenge and definitely rises to that, but this year it isn't happening.

Right now I think it will be good for dd to see the SENCO just as someone different to talk to as there has been a significant change in her but we can't find out why. She is having friendship issues (classes mixed and has affected dd more than anyone expected) which is part of the reason but not all of it.

She's your daughter's favourite teacher yet you don't think she engages with her Hmm

No, not in an academic sense I don't.
