When do students have to show working outs on tests?

All the tests at my kids school are tick boxes where you select one of five answers and then the papers are scanned for marking.

At what point (in the UK system) are children taught to show their working outs on paper so that they get marks in their tests? So far this has never been explained in school. (year 6)

If you are purely talking tests there are points in the Year 2 SATs paper (level 2 and level 3) that need to show workings out, but it doesn't have to be number sentences it can be pictorial.

I am thinking more of the high school tests but wondered if the UK taught year 6 how to show working outs

There are definitely questions in the yr6 SATs that ask for workings to be shown. Marks are offered in some questions for showing workings, especially if the pupil's final answer is wrong but the method in their workings was correct, I think.
Showing workings out is encouraged in our school.

I have always stressed to DS (in year 3 at the moment) that you should show your workings as if you've got one thing wrong, the person marking it will at least be able to see what you were trying to do. I am sure they do it at school as well but as an exam marker I like to go on about it mention it as well Grin

I've never seen the in-house tests used in DC's primary, but the homework worksheets certainly ask for them to show workings (yr3 and above - can't remember what happened in Ks1).

we were first told about showing workings out when ds1 was in yr r. he's y5 now. he still doesn't do it. given that every teacher in the intervening years has mentioned it, i'm pretty sure it's covered incessantly. Grin

I've seen working out in my Y1 son's maths books.

I've also seen past SATs papers (Y6) and you get marks for working out.

Any maths test which isn't multiple choice should show working. I can't remember when in primary DD was taught this but as others have said, its clearly stated in some of the SATs questions.
