What work can i do at home with ds(6yrs)?
His teacher has asked that we practice at home, mainly using more interesting words.
We so far have just been choosing a object and getting him to describe it,hes getting bored with it.
although hes quite good at spelling he hasnt got much confidence when writing it down by himself, how can i help this?ive been praising him lots when he does try.

Thanks

Get him a childrens dictionary/thesaurus; think of a bland adjective eg. "nice" and look up, together, more interesting choices; challenge him to include one of the better words in his home or school writing. Back later with more ideas...

DD's homework is often to do a comprehension sheet.

Read a book then write a sentence or two explaining what happened at the beginning , middle and end and a line saying who her favourite character was and why.

At first she wanted to do it excatly the same as the book but it has now clicked and she uses her own words (inc some phonetic spelling)

Hi griffalo2:

Some of these games of the Woodlands Jnr School website may be of help: www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/interactive/literacy2.htm#grammar

Woodlands Junior School (Kent) : www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/ - has all sorts of on-line games for various subjects - just explore.

KS1 bittesize www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/ has lots of revision games in literacy - but Kung Fu sentences may be of help: www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/literacy/making_sentences/play/ - you have options of ability level as well.

BBC also has a game called penguins on ice - and you can specifically request that you play the game to make sentences intereseting: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/starship/english/penguinsonice.shtml

Hope that helps
