What is 'typical'/expected handwriting for Yr3 please.

We are coming home to the UK month (from US) and

DS8 will be going in to YR3.

The system is different here, they mostly still print or...practice the most intricate cursive. DS is dreadful at the latter Grin

Are the children expected to have mastered UK cursive by now? I am thinking of giving him a bit of practice if need be. Are there any sites I could have a look at. My eldest started cursive 7 years ago (uk) but I have no idea what it was called.

Thanks so much.

By Y3 kids will have been taught cursive, and using it.

Yes, MOST kids will be doing cursive. DS (yr 3) really struggles with it (fine motor issues), so he has special permission to print, just as long as he tries to write the letters close to each other so it looks like it's joined up!

Alot of children in DDs Y3 class are not joining their letters. there does not seem to be any rush for them to do so.

i think they would be doing cursive, my ds is in school nursery class and the teacher said they are starting them all on cursive straight away, since the last 2 years they have been doing it but may vary from school or borough

Depends on the school. DS has been doing it since Yr1. I wouldn't stress though - the new school will help him if he's doing something different.

DS's Y3 class are teaching cursive to all children at the moment with the expectation that most will be using it by the end of the year. DS (who has awful handwriting) hasn't done any so far as they concentrated on improving his letter formation in infants - however other children are already using it (my DD is Y1 and being taught it now).

DS was taught cursive in yr2. They are honing their skills in yr3. However know of at least 2 state schools in same county who teach it from reception.

looks like its a bit of a mix then, or at least he still has time to learn.

Thanks all :)

Yr4 and DS has only just started joined up. I think that the expectation is that they are all using it by yr5 which is when they start using pens.

My children's school does 'cursive from the start' - DD, who has been there from reception, finds this easy, DS, who arrived at the end of Year 1 and so never had the same teaching on handwriting, found it much harder!

Where I teach, cursive is taught in Year 2 and honed in Year 3 BUT we do have some children who do not do cursive as yet (as in they learn it in focused handwriting sessions but do not yet use it in their general work). A fluent joined handwriting style is one of the criteria for the higher writing levels in assessments (e.g. APP, optional SATs) at this age - so not 'expected', but encouraged for higher achievers..
