I am blatantly copying somebody else's thread here because I am desperate to know what my son is doing at school, I cannot get a decent answer out of him and his teacher is extremely defensive and actually, she never gives me a straight answer either! So what are your Y3 DC doing at the moment in:

Literacy
Numeracy
Science
Geography

TIA

Ummmmmm....

They're doing a project on Victorians....

... I'll ask DD for more details.

FootprintsInTheSnow · 26/01/2012 20:01

Numeracy: subtracting (columns / expanded / or the 'just write it down way') numbers 'up to a million'

Science: 'we've not been doing science, but our next topic is bones blood and body'

Literacy 'we're writing riddles and rhymes'. and 'handwriting' and learning about fairy tales.

'We're not doing geography. But we've learnt about the first underground station that the Victorians built.

State school

I'm a TA in a year 3 class in state school. We are currently doing addition of 2 or 3 digit numbers in numeracy using number lines/partitioning. We are now beginning to move on to money, understanding the value of coins and how to add up different amounts of money (e.g. £3.22 + £1.70)

In literacy we are studying the book 'Leon and Bob' which is about a boy with an imaginary friend. Lots of work on imaginary friends, writing letters/describing Leon's morning routine/writing our own versions of the story etc. We also have a big focus on speech marks and extended nouns at the moment.

In science we have been looking at plants, how they grow, the names of different parts of a plant - have done experiments such as celery in water with food colouring.

Not sure about geography or history as I don't work on those days!

Numeracy - Fractions and division
Literacy - Roald Dahl books and poetry
Science - Digestive system and food groups

Another mum of a yr 3 child who, on reading this thread, realises she has absolutely no idea what her ds is learning at school. Blush

I do know that he and some of his friends made lego rockets and fired them at the light fittings whilst the relief teacher wasn't looking (his very strict teacher is away this week). Blush Blush

Sticklebug · 26/01/2012 21:52

State

Topic - Toys
Science - materials and making toys that move
English - persausive writing, lots of work on writing adverts and making posters
Music - use of percussion (made in science class)
Maths - mulitplication, division and percentages. Tonights homework was working out 10% saving on prices and then working out the new cost.

mercibucket · 26/01/2012 21:55

What is an extended noun??
Mine is doing recycling, stupid stuff identifying nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives (going on hwk activity), using a range of punctuation, easy fractions eg 1/4

State

Doing Greek Myths at the moment which seems to be being covered in different lessons
Been doing lots of work on times tables recently including an exciting sounding game today
In Science they've been doing about teeth - made their own toothpaste yesterday and were investigating whether mouthwash works today doing an experiment involving eggs (think they were being used in place of teeth).
Multiplication of 2 digit by 1 digit numbers
Not quite sure what else but DS is just so enthused at the moment and it is great to see :)

TheBolter · 26/01/2012 22:03

State

Topic - the Aztecs
Numeracy - fractions, times tables, symmetry, addition and subtraction of 'big' numbers.
Literacy - spellings such as 'inquisitive', reading Jaqueline Wilson and Jill Murphy, early Harry Potter.
Science, history, geography - no idea, but dd1 is regularly coming home with interesting facts. She seems to know where most of the more 'well known' countries are, she knows about Henry VIII, the Tudors, the Romans, the Victorians. Shows interest in scientific stuff such as gravity etc. Must have a catch up with her tomorrow!

letthembe · 26/01/2012 23:39

I'm a Y3 teacher in a state school

Working on joining letters in writing

Correct use of speech marks

Maths (top set) - all times tables and associated division facts, fractions (probably more he's not telling)
