I have an interview after a bit of time out of teaching next week and have to do a sample lesson - eeek. Its to a Year 5 class and has to be on poetry - does anyone have a fab lesson idea I could pilfer - I've gone into a blind panic! Any ideas much appreciated.

Oh God, can't even spell 'Literacy' - doesn't bode well!

Surely?

To be honest, if you can't think of a lesson for yourself I don't think I want you teaching any of the children in my family.

And thats why I LOVE mumsnet - thanks for your constructive comments. TBH I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want a parent such as you either Plymouth. I obviously can think of lessons but after a long break was hoping to get the advice/opinions of others who have had more recent experience - so shoot me (please)

Not a year 5 teacher so can't help. If I were you I would look on the TES website and post there - helpful, caring colleagues who will suggest some ideas - of a very different nature to that posted here.

Sorry op - not a teacher and dd in yr 4 so can't help. Fwiw they've been writing haikus this week.

Plymouth - that was hideously rude of you. Totally uncalled for. Angry

deep breaths and read the current documents? they may give you an idea.

do the children need to write poetry or discuss poetry or both?

what are the characteristics of good lessons? how long have you got and what is the format?

richmal · 26/01/2012 21:06

I'm not a teacher, but I did Thoughtfox by Ted Hughes with dd and she loved the poem.

Personification poetry is Simple and effective. Take in an object that can be personified and give the chn a structure such as one line what it looks like, one line what it wants, one line how it feels etc.

PlymouthSound · 26/01/2012 22:06

So, instead of asking for ideas that you can 'pilfer', how about suggesting some ideas of your own that we can help you with? Initial reaction still stands.

letthembe · 26/01/2012 23:50

You need to find out the ability range first. Personification may too much for some Y5s. Don't over think the lesson, they are not expecting perfection but how you interacted with the children, question to bring out their ideas and develop the learning and whether you can structure a lesson that teaches them something. (Well that's what my school look for anyway.) Word of advice - don't rely on technology - it always fails when you don't want it to.

Can I just give you a little ray of hope? For the interview for my current job I had to do a lesson. And I really fluffed it! Thought it was for 30 mins but in fact it was for an hour (luckily I'd trialled it with my own class first and knew how to develop things). But, it was planned with high expectation, kept the children active, not too much teacher talk (boring) and they learnt something.

Be yourself - good luck.
