"The truth is our SEN children achieve highly without any EP input because staff don't wait around for reports before they initiate support."

Absolutely. We had a new child arrive a couple of weeks ago, informally assessed by TA and by me on 1st day. Had clear difficulties in a number of areas so 1 to 1 and small group interventions started on the afternoon of the first day (TAs work in class in am, are trained to deliver particular interventions in the pm, this child was immediately added to their intervention timetables).

External assessment will almost certainly happen at some point (mainly to justify the fact that we immediately placed this child on the SEN register at SA+, and to provide support should we need to go for a statement) but I have every expectation that it will merely endorse what we are already doing.

In other schools, I know that nothing would happen until the external assessment had been completed....

Thanks everyone for your input - I think it really confirms what I've felt, ie that the value of an EP report would be in the context of school, and that an independent report is unlikely to have any real use.

As I mentioned on another thread we've heard really positive things about our catchment secondary school from other parents whose children have dyslexic / dyspraxic type SENs so we are optimistic there. (And it is unpopular & undersubscribed so we can assume dd will get a place if she chooses it!)

Toe by Toe is good for dyslexia. It's what we use at our school with struggling readers.

I have used:
toe by toe
step by step
headsprout
jolly phonics

any other ideas?
