Primary and nursery schools Glasgow area

We may be relocating to Glasgow. I need to know which schools are good including nursery. Ideally I would be looking for a primary with a nursery attached. My husband is willing to commute into Glasgow up to 40mins. Don't really know anything about Glasgow and surrounding areas. Thought I would narrow it down by pinpointing schools first before housing. Any help would be very much appreciated. I have three DC aged 8, 3 and 18 months. Thanks

Do you have any idea what area in Glasgow you'd like to live? Do you want to live North/South/East/West? In a town outside of Glasgow?

Almostfifty · 25/01/2012 14:17

When we moved, I contacted the local councils and asked for a list of schools. I then went online and looked at their HMI reports (OFSTED in Scotland).

We then drew a line around OH's work forty minutes away and looked at those areas. He then started asking around for the best areas.

East Dunbartonshire has a lot of nice areas to live with good schools. Try Bearsden or Milngavie. Both have great primaries and all Bearsden primaries feed into Bearsden Academy which is always a top ranked secondary.

Thank you. Haven't got a clue we will live almostfifty We will have one pre move visit. We live in the channel islands at the mo so it's not easy to do lots of visits beforehand. The schools will probably dictate where will live. Want to live a nice family area where lots to do etc. Really useful info euphemia and Harley thanks. If you all can give me any more tips I would so grateful it's so handy to gain local knowledge.

With a 40 min commute you could live in a village outside Glasgow, a suburb or in the city. So what kind of area do you want?

SootySweepandSue · 25/01/2012 20:29

Here are 3 good options; Houston/Bridge of Weir; around Newton Mearns / Clarkston or Bearsden/Milngavie. They are the nicest areas with best schools.

Where are you moving from? Unfortunately a lot of English kids can get a bit of an accent ribbing at Scottish schools but the aforementioned areas are relatively 'well to do' so this would be less of a problem. Sad but true IME.

Thanks sooty we are moving from Jersey so you can't get more southern!

Glasgow West End worth considering: lovely area near university, big tenements/ Victorian houses, leafy streets, central location, subway, no need for commute because lovely parks, cafes, restaurants, art galleries are right on your doorstep.

Schools: Hillhead Primary has a Kelvin Psrk Early Years which takes toddlers from age two. Broomhill Primary I've heard is good, Notre Dame well thought of. There's always Glasgow Academy if you're minted.

lancaster · 26/01/2012 20:07

I would second west end and Broomhill primary but depends what type of area you want to live in. Broomhill to me is a good mix of fairly central location but feels like a community. However, not many schools in west end have attached nurseries - Hillhead and Thornwood both do.

I remember it as safeway.

How very posh!

lancaster · 26/01/2012 20:34

Parking around Byres road can be difficult but not that bad everywhere in the West End. Like I said, depends what kind of area you fancy.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 26/01/2012 20:36

parking's not a nightmare if you have good karma... someone's always pulling out somewhere. and it's not like you actually need a car much if you're in the WE and working in town.

NormanTebbit · 26/01/2012 20:39

Yes
(grits teeth)

Must remember the karma when trying to park on a Sunday night (Grin)

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 26/01/2012 20:42

our bit is good on a sunday night before the students come back with their fresh washing.
