Come dressed as an astronaut....

The school has thankfully given me a bit of notice - but my two dds have to come dressed as astronauts in 2 weeks time. I don't want to spend loads of money and am not gifted with a good creative mind....anyone have any ideas that they can share? Sewing skills are average......

Can you cover arm bands in silver foil, stick some NASA sign on off the internet and have them as oxygen tanks? I have an impression of astrononauts in orange or navy blue. think the helmet is a must tjough and don't have a clue about that one!

cereal box for helmet, just cut out a rectange for the face, cover in clear plastic. cover whole thing in foil

MrsChemist · 23/01/2012 13:20

For the helmet, get a box, cut a hole out of it for the head, cover in tin foil. You can fashion 2ltr bottles into air cannisters by covering them in tin foil too.

Yy to printing off NASA logos and sticking them on.

Remember astronauts float inside their rockets in all in one type suits - it's not just about floating about outside the rocket in their silver outfits...

And they must need pyjamas to sleep in at some point Grin - just print off a NASA badge from the internet and stick on with a bit of double sided sticky tape onto whatever outfit you want them to wear!

Alternatively have they specified what sort of astronauts - do you have anything that could be turned into an alien astronaut costume easily?

Hi, there we had one of those days last year. I got one of those cheap, disposable, white boiler suits from a dIY shop, covered a cereal box in foil for an air tank on his back tied on with string, my Ds cut a hole in the front of a box and stuck foil over it for a helmet and we covered his wellies with foil, oh and he painted a NASA bage on a piece of card which we stuck to the front of the boiler suit.

MamaMaiasaura · 23/01/2012 13:47

My friend had this for her dd and bought a bucket and used that as a helmet Grin

There's a lovely picture book about a teddy bear who goes to the moon.
He wore wellies, a colander on his head, and what else? I can't remember, but the book was called "whatever next?"

UniS · 23/01/2012 19:23

Tin foil is your friend.

Box helmet. boiler suit if you have one ( don't buy one specially) same colour top and trews if you don't have one. gloves, wellies. what ever you fancy as a back pack with tubes and dials and buttons and the like.

I decorate a cycle helmet very carefully with mini planets etc. Dd then refused to wear it and it sat unseen on the floor behind her. My advice is to do as little as possible

areyoutheregoditsmemargaret · 23/01/2012 19:25

i decorated Blush

Oh aren't you all v v v v creative....! I am very impressed. Thank you so much for all your ideas....we'll get saving the junk modelling and the tin foil...I'll let you know how it goes...

I used an empty M&S salad bowl (from the pre-packed range), punched holes in it, attached some string and used that for the helmet.

For the body it was a box covered in foil with some juice bottles facing downwards for rocket boosters.

Glued on bottle tops from other drinks as buttons and knobs and then drew some bits to stick on as a control panel.

Other kids bought theirs but we had a really good laugh making it and have put it away incase younger one ever gets to be an astronaut.

Good luck!

Bicycle helmet covered with baking foil. White shirt/polo with white leggings/trousers and if you can find an iron on Nasa/space type badge to put on shirt and/or trousers. Large plastic lemonade bottle stripped of all paper might make a good oxygen tank with a piece of hose or string or wool. Maybe you can get some self stick velcro, put that on the bottles and on the polo so he can wear the oxygen tanks. Alternativey, cover the bottles with foil or paint them silver (silver glue paint sticks well on plastic, but do give it enough time to dry).

DS had a bit of a rockets to the moon phase - White thermals (long johns & longsleeved vest), lager box with hole in front for face, spray painted silver.
NASA badges off Internet, ski gloves ... We then had to make the damn rocket Wink
