dh went and signed something to allow ds (age5) to have extra help but what does is actually mean? It has a UPN on it and says IEP number one and it says SA SA+ statement but SA is highlighted and it says "my individual education plan" so is it an education plan or does it mean he has a slight learning difficulty? I'm not being a snob or bring thick I was going to speak to the teacher who is organising it (also the SENCO) myself but dh was in area so he went.ds is in yr 1 of course.thanks in advance x

Yes, it means he is on the SEN register at SA (School Action) level - which is the 'lowest' level.

And what being on the SEN register means is that he's receiving extra help. For anything.

It doesn't necessarily mean he has SN (Special Needs)

IEPs can be for learning difficulties, or for social or behavioural difficulties.

Do you have a copy of the IEP? You really should have a copy, and you really should have discussed it properly with the teacher.

Plus you should have been told he'd been put on the SEN register.

SA is School Action, so the first stage of intervention. It may simply be a specific area he needs consolidation work in a small group for, like phonics or letter formation and fine motor skills. Lots of kids do this short term and have no underlying learning issue. My guess is UPN woudl be a unique pupil number
