Need some help with this ds 4.11 is great at his phonics and if I put a word in front of him he will say m-u-m and I say so what word is it and he can't do it, I really want to help him be able to blend the sounds together but am finding it very hard atm. Any advice would be apreciated :)

Start with the basic blends like th sh ch st and see if that helps. He might not understand that the different individual sounds join together yet. When you sound things out for him do each sound separately than merge them together in a very slow obvious way - he will catch on!!

Yes hes starting the ch and sh sounds at school this week so I suppose that will help, thanks. I dont think he understands that they join yet as he's just mastered all the phonics now so this will be the next part.

Try playing some games - like I spy but using all the sounds. So you could say, "I spy a c-a-t" and he has to say what it is. Do this without any written sounds so he gets used to blending them orally. Then he can do an I spy for you.

Also casually do some "sounded out" words during the day. eg "Do you want some m-i-l-k on your cornflakes?" "Would you like a s-w-ee-t?" "It is time for b-e-d now." ( Though it may take him a very long time to hear that one!! Grin )
