Methods to learn times table

My dc's (year 2) school seem to have an interesting approach to learning the times table.

There is a chart on the wall with every child's name written on it, and the times table they know are marked off on this chart.

But no formal learning of times table is undertaken i.e. they don't bring any work home, no mention has been made to learn x3 this term or anything.

Well some of the kids have an awful lot of the times table marked off, and some have very few including my dc, who has x2, x5 and x10 marked off.

This shocked me when I saw this chart, as teacher always sings my dc's praises where maths is concerned, including in school report. But I know feel I should have been doing something with times tables.

Anyone know what the best way to learn the times tables are? DC won't do workbooks at home, so any cds, or computer programmes or websites anyone can recommend?

In year 2 the expectation is to know 2X, 5X & 10X
the remaining tables are expected to be taught in Y3 & Y4

I use Percy Parker Times Tables with my Y2 class and once children know their 2,5 and 10 they can choose the next table they wish to learn. Usually most know all their tables before they leave.

Oh I wonder then as he knows the expectation, if he picks up the others bonus, otherwise they are not worried to do specifics.

Thank you for the links I'll check those out.

I wouldn't worry at year 2. My children's school was in line with that of mrz. In Y4 they started to have weekly tests of all the tables up to 10x. I did however blitz their knowledge at this stage and they were very fast by the end of Y4 (and I included up to 12x)

Whilst teaching them I used cards with the multiples on and asked them to turn over eg 2x7, 8x7, 4x7. I have produced an android app that does this - it is free and available here

Once they knew them, I tested them regularly with my online app which is available here Some schools use this one.

I did find that after they knew them, their mental maths improved considerably.
