I had experience with this programme at dc old primary school and was amazed at my ds progress with it.

Move forwards a year and a bit and his new school does not use anything like this,I have posted about him recently as he was on sen then removed as they said he no longer needed it.Anyway I want to help him along at home but not with the ridiculous pieces of paper they send home with words on for him to learn to spell as it's the sounds he has trouble recognizing, nothing wrong with him memorising things. He will be 7 soon but still on yellow books to read at school.

So have any of you bought the programme to use at home andd did you find it a successful tool to help your dc along.I just don't want to spend nearly £50 on the programme if it just to much to use as a parent at home.

TIA.

Each colour only costs about £8.

You could just spend £8 on getting him the current colour, and work with him at home. But it is quite hard to turn it from reading 'books' into a 'learn to read' program.

However, a program that's more designed for parents to use at home is Dancing Bears.

I think Dancing Bears is the best thing for parents to use.

Hi indigo, just had a look but it is currently out of stock so would have to order and wait.

Is this a system that when he has finished with this book then there is more to continue supporting his learning ?

Sorry, buy it from this site then.

Depending on his current level he might need to do Dancing Bears A, B & C.

Poke around the site - they have lots of options. And you can 'see inside' each book to help you decide.

Good luck.

oh thanks Indigo have just had a really good look through the book you suggested,I like the idea of a cursor as he always tries to read from right to left, his father was dyslexic but the school swear blind that he is not and just keep sending me home with lists of words for him to learn.

I'm using Bear Necessities (industrial strength phonics) with a group

IndigoBell and Mrz I have read many of your threads and am sure Im the 1000th person to say thank you both for your invaluable advice.

I'm now hijacking this thread to ask you which prog you'd suggest for my nearly 7 year old ds - a&pears or dancing bears - there's a rhyme there...

Reading - not bad, level purple but feel we are plateau-ing, spelling - told below average. Never attempts to put vowels in words unless the obvious cvc words - eg villg for village, fthr for father. Really struggles with concept of the magic 'e'. He'll write out a key word three times and have forgotten how to spell it at the end (but not convinced if simply not paying attention ?!)

I just want to do a little bit at home with one of these progs and see how year 2 progresses as my DD made a massive leap in this year but I'm beginning to have nagging concerns.....its difficult to judge when disinterest and cantbebothered-ness are thrown into the mix !!

1001 thanks !

Personally I would use Apples & Pears as it has a spelling focus and just 10 mins a day can make a difference.

IndigoBell · 06/01/2012 21:02

Yes, Apples & Pears. :)

I bought it to use with my children when we lived in France. I bought the reading and Get Writing books from ebay.
