Admissions and moving house - help!

Hi all,

Can anyone explain to me what happens with regards to admissions for Year R if we were to move house between now and April?

I haven't applied for a school yet and the closing date is fast approaching. I think I need to put down our current preference but what happens if we move house in the very near future? Will it be classed as a late application for our new school?

I phoned the admissions office but they're about as useful as a chocolate teapot...

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as we're so confused and stressed by the whole issue Sad

Apply from your current address and then advise them when you move. I believe there is a (shortish) period after the deadline during which it would n't be classified as a late application but this may vary from LA to LA. Are you moving within the same area if so can you list the other school as well ?

Your LA should have admissions info on their website.

You can only apply using the address that you are at now, unless you have exchanged on another house or have tenancy agreement.

If you move after closing date but before allocation date you may be considered under their lat application process iirc.

If you move after places allocated then you would go on waiting list your place based against admission criteria.

You must apply from your current address otherwise you will definitely be classed as a late applicant. Your LA may allow you to change your preferences when you move but it depends on when the move takes place. Some LAs will accept a change of address after your application but you generally only have a few weeks for this and many won't allow it at all.

If you can say which LA is involved I'll see if I can find out more for you. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post this publicly.

Hi, thanks for your replies.

Our LA is Hampshire (is that right or is it sub-divided?). Would it be fair to say then that we may move but end up being placed in our current catchment school? How do they deal with that if the current catchment school is quite far away from the new house?

Thanks for your help with this.

Hampshire the cut off date for on-time applications is 15th January 2012 and you need to apply by then putting down your preferences based on where you currently live. If you can move before the 17th February then the LA will, assume you can prove you have moved, allow you to change your preferences to fit with your knew house location.

If you move after 17th Feb you have two possibilities, you can stick with the preferences on your original form and see how you get on or you can alter the form. However if you alter the preferences after the 17th Feb then it is classed as being a late application and as such your application will not be considered till after all on-time applications have been allocated. The likelyhood is that you will then get allocated a place at a school that is not full and nearest to your new address and probably not a school that you would consider as a preference.

It rather depends on how far apart the old and new address are as to which is preferable. If there is any chance of commuting from the new address to a school in the old vicinity then it probably better to do that and not alter the admission preferences. You need to inform the LA of the new address as soon as known but after the 17th Feb they will use the old address for allocation of school, the new address will simply be for communication. You could then, having been allocated a school, appeal for schools near to your new home but their is no guarantee that you will be successful.
