Hello, we live in London but have been looking into various areas to move to outside London and haven't yet found any that work for us yet. We'd like to explore Windsor, it's not far from relatives and near my DH's work. I'd really like to get some information on the good state primary schools there and do you have to live very close to get into them? Is there a good RC school there, and also if there are any good state secondary schools there too? Thank you

St Edwards is RC and fantastic (primary) there is also the middle school - Catchment area is tiny!

Windsor Boys school has a good reputation. The same cannot be said for Windsor Girls school which is utterly dreadful. Charters is supposed to be ok.

St Edward's - but you have to live within spitting distance.

londonkids · 21/12/2011 08:05

Thank you very much, do you any others apart from st Edwards? Is st Edwards one form or two form entry, we would be an in year application so would be looking to get on a waiting list waiting for someone to leave. Is Windsor boys private or state?? Thanks so much. I think if the catchments are tiny like London we'd rent till we got a place then buy, do you know what kind of distances, less than .2 miles? Thank you very much.

St Mary's in Winkfield Row (4 miles from Windsor). Very good reputation.

Do you know anything about The Royal First School. On its ofsted report it seemed unusual that the school only went to 9 years, as they mix the year groups it seems that they might not be oversubscribed with pupils so we might stand more of chance with an in year application. We like mixed year groups, but wondered if this was maybe an unpopular school , or is it considered good, we just weren't sure, any info greatly appreciated.

Windsor has a three tier system - first schools to Year 4, Middle schools to Y8, and upper schools (a boys' and a girls' to sixth form.

There are two upper schools, 4 middle schools and a whole bunch of first schools.

The Royal School is in the middle of Windsor Great Park and was original aimed at estate children. Anyone can go there, but it attracts those families with transport and who are looking for a small school.

My friend used to live on the estate in Dedworth- think it's called the Laing estate? She put her kids through St Edward's. Where they lived on the Laing really wasn't that close (she does live over the road from it now though). I'm pretty sure it is 2 form entry.

Windsor boys is a state school.

amerryscot · 21/12/2011 21:06

SERFs has a three-form entry, 93 pupils per year.

londonkids · 21/12/2011 21:35

Thanks so much, so st Edwards is just to 9 years too? Please could you tell me the names of the four middle schools if you know them, what age is y8? I'm guessing Windsor boys is one of the upper schools, what is the name of the other school? Does royal first have a good reputation? So apart from st Edwards and royal first do you know the names of any other first schools worth checking out? Thanks so much.

schools info here There's a link to the maps online which show the admissions areas.

MollieO · 21/12/2011 23:40

Windsor boys and windsor girls and charters are all secondary schools (comprehensives).

amerryscot · 22/12/2011 08:55

Google is your friend, London.

londonkids · 22/12/2011 12:23

Thanks for all your help. I find google and ofsted not much help to be honest, you need to hear it from local mums. If you looked at google and ofsted to base your decisions on my local area you'd think a lot of poor schools were excellent just because they tick the boxes and teach kids for the sats, the info you guys have given me has been much more useful. Thanks so much.

There is no way I am typing out a list of first schools on my iPad.

londonkids · 22/12/2011 20:00

ok no worries - sorry I asked for the names of the middle schools - thought you said there were only 4??? sent my messages thru an iphone - isn't the ipad the same system?? thanks for all your help - it was very useful. I'll look on google then, just thought it was nice chatting to other local mums and getting a feel for schools and gathering information from the people who really know.
