How does the SATS mark for English relate to Reading and Writing

DS' school gives us SAT levelled marks at the end of each year, always for the three areas of Maths, Reading and Writing. However, looking at the published figures online, it only shows Maths and English.

Does anyone know how the English mark is calculated, is it just an average of the two literacy marks, or do they have to get to the level in both areas?

We're having a big push on reading in the spring term - like I said, it's inference and deduction that seems to be weak and going beyond the literal.

Our reading levels are always higher than writing but after a big push on writing the gap has closed considerably over the past few years.

Sorry to butt in but re giving children homework in holidays, I know I would be p*ed off if my child was told they must do homework (yr2 and yr1); but once they have been to fairyland each day, they both want to sit down and play schools with some letts workbooks. Until about a month ago dd1 was the most reluctant at maths, it has suddenly clicked and she can't get enough.

Having to buy some more books today as dd1 finished all hers and begging for more. Can't go on computer which is in a cupboard as have a toddler too and they will all want a go. Also worried will get squashed by present avalanche as Father Christmas has stored all his toys above the computer! Enjoy your Christmasses!

Get them to do a storyboard - get a large piece of paper each and divide it into sections. They can then do a sequenced story - draw a picture for each stage of the story and then add a little bit of independent writing under each section about a snowman who came to life, or a santa clause who got stuck in a chimney, etc.
