approach to reading in reception

Just wondering if they have changed the way they teach reading in reception. My dd is doing well with her reading, but school seem to be really pushing her through the book bands much faster than i would have expected. Is there a new approach this year, or is she doing better than i thought? (I have an older ds in year 2 who can read, but have forgotten what he was like in reception).

Sounds like they're trying to find her level

Just trying to find the right level I think - the same thing has happened with my DD in reception, they've changed the level of books she brings home quite a few times, but they're about right now and haven't changed for a while.

Thanks for the replies. She couldn't read at the start of reception. Now she can read all words with sounds she knows (and a few others she just recognises), but some of the books they are giving her now are long and include sounds she doesn't know yet (even though they are phonic based). I think the amount of words on the page is putting her off, even though she can read quite a few of them.

my dds school said they like to give them a book which thye can read so it gives them confidence, rather than a book they will struggle with.
this term seems to have been finding their places along the scheme.

I think agree with your schools' approach familyfun. It seems that as soon as she is reading one colour band pretty well, they move her up to next level. I seem to remember the opposite approach with my ds who crawled up the book bands in reception.

dd is moving up quite quickly but has enough time with each book and hasnt struggled as yet.
if she comes home with one she cant decode i would stick a post it on saying she couldnt read the sond "x" whatever it was and hope they would give her more practice onit.
also dd keeps each book she finishes so we can reread them to practice
