OFSTED reports

How long from doing the inspection is it that they give the report out? I'm curious as to how my ds's school did at its recent inspection and no parents have received anything and its not on the ofsted website. It was a week ago.

Think they take a few weeks or so.

snowball3 · 12/12/2011 17:41

My son's school was OFSTEDed last Wednesday and Thursday, they were verbally told the results on Friday and we were sent a letter today with the grading! However I think it usually takes several weeks for the actual reports to come out. The are sent to the school and LA in draft form first in caase any factual errors are spotted, before being published.

beingarebel · 12/12/2011 17:45

If they've been verbally told they've not passed that on to parents but I guess telling them verbally is down to the individual inspectors. Sounds like we won't hear before the end of term.

NO, the schools are told before the Inspectors leave what the grading will be,so the school knows, it's just not letting on!

DanFmDorking · 12/12/2011 17:56

The OFSTED inspector will (probably / almost certainly) tell the Head straight away about the overall grade (Grade 1 Outstanding, Grade 2 Good, Grade 3 Satisfactory, Grade 4 Inadequate). After that, the Head will probably not make a public announcement until the Staff and Governors are formally told, (probably in a staff meeting). Then, probably, a letter will go out to pupils / parents (all interested parties) within a day or so announcing the result. You may then obtain the full report from the school.

If there is a longer delay it's probably because the school is disputing some of the report's findings. The report will eventually appear on the OFSTED web site after about six weeks.

What's the difference between an OFSTED inspector and a haddock?
One is wet and slippery, and the other's a fish.

What's the difference between an OFSTED inspector and a terrorist?
You can negotiate with a terrorist.

What's the difference between an OFSTED inspector and a paranoid schizophrenic?
The schizophrenic only thinks everyone hates them.

Etc. ect. etc

beingarebel · 12/12/2011 17:56

Oh, are you sure? If so then they might not be happy. You would think if it was good or outstanding they'd be shouting it from the roof tops.

Most inspectors know the grade they are going to give before they walk through the door!

beingarebel · 12/12/2011 18:07

How does that work snowball3? Surely alot could have changed in the 5 years since the previous inspection. Makes you wonder what the point is of an inspection if they've decided before they even walk through the door.

Beingarebel,

Most of the grade is made up of data - data available to the inspector before they've ever seen the school. They also read the school's self-evaluation.

beingarebel · 12/12/2011 18:11

Oh right, that makes sense. So its just a making sure sort of visit then?

Still seems like we're going to be waiting to see the report. I was just wondering. I thought it would be a week or something.

SEF=self-evaluation form, available online beforehand to the inspectors, so, yes, teacherwith2kids is right.

Collision · 12/12/2011 18:28

Yep - they know on the day but keep quiet about it until the formal results come out and they can write to parents.

starfishmummy · 12/12/2011 18:32

We got the report in about ten days.

IndigoBell · 12/12/2011 19:04

In the SEF the school actually grades itself, and the inspectors are really only checking that they agree with the mark the HT has given.

They probably got a satisfactory, otherwise you'd have heard :)

JWIM · 12/12/2011 19:05

Ofsted Inspector will feedback their conclusion at the end of the Inspection. The report is then written, a draft sent to the school and Ofsted also moderate/check report language against their criteria. Only when signed off by Ofsted isthe grading final. Heads/Govs are told they should not reveal the outcome until the report is final. Releasing the outcome within a day or two of the inspection may be a calculated risk in that Ofsted could amend the grading up or down in the final report.

Report usually final within 14 days.

wheredidiputit · 12/12/2011 21:11

SEF reports no longer exsist. The government got rid of them but have not decided a replacement as yet.

teacherwith2kids · 12/12/2011 21:39

Not quite sure what my head has just finished writing, then....

I know that the format for the self-evaluation changes in January, along the same lines as the new format inspections, but my understanding is that there is still a requirement for schools to document their self-evaluation and that this along with data will pre-inform Ofsted inspectors...maybe I'm wrong?

teacherwith2kids · 12/12/2011 21:42

Quick Google seems to suggest that the 'mandatory format' for a SEF has been removed BUT that schools are still required to carry out and document their self-evaluation... so pretty much a deckchair and Titanic scenario...

IndigoBell · 13/12/2011 00:28

Teacher - my understanding is the same as yours. They still need a SEF (if they're expecting OFSTED :) ) but can use ant format at the moment.

admission · 13/12/2011 10:51

Ofsted when they arrive will expect the school to be able to explain what is going on in the school and how well they are doing, that is self evaluation. It used to be done via the over-elaborate and annoying SEF but now it can be done any way that the school wants. Having said that Ofsted will I am sure not be impressed by a school head teacher who says that all the detail is in my head but i believe the school is outstanding. So some kind of written self evaluation is vital.
I think that any school needs to wait until the official report is agreed before sharing that information with parents. Locally I know of two schools who have in the past 6 months disputed the original findings of the inspector and been upgraded from satisfactory to good on the basis of what the school disputed and could prove. That does ask some rather awkward questions of the inspection teams involved but I am sure both schools would much rather report that the school is good rather than just satisfactory.

GeorgeT · 13/12/2011 16:31

My DD's school recently received an outstanding OFSTED and it did take a couple of weeks before we got the report. You can look at the SEF but not sure that schools have to produce one (Change of policy) most schools do still use it as they find it helpful.

ilovedjasondonovan · 13/12/2011 16:39

My DDs school recently got a 4 - my husband is a governor and it took him a couple of weeks to find out. Parents it took another couple of weeks after that.

Thats one of the reasons its a 4!! Slow comms.

But, saying that, it is a 4, but a brilliant school. Never thought I'd say that, but it really is. Ofsted reports arn't everything.
