Christmas Party in Reception - What to Wear!

My dd (nearly 5) is independently-minded (!) and and wants to wear extremely boyish clothes to the school's Christmas Party on Monday. I am worried that this will cause problems as I know many of the other girls will be wearing traditional party dresses. I am very happy that she has the confidence to be different but I feel very anxious too. Can any of you offer reassurance?

let her wear what she wants to wear. If it is 'wrong' she won't do it next year!

DS1 (yr1)wore his earmuffs to school last week and now isn't keen on them. I suspect someone laughed at him (bless him and I would throttle any child who did this, but I have to let him do as he wants)

I dropped my 4yo DD at her first school Xmas disco last Thursday. She wore jeans, trainers and a checked shirt (her choice). Most of the other girls were in full on bridesmaid gear or Disney dresses. A few had trousers but very sparkly tops. She didn't care and she had a ball! Smile

She would feel more uncomfortable if 'made' to wear a dress

I just don't want her to be singled out as 'wierd'. Am so pleased that she has settled in well, and would hate that to change!

if she feels uncomfortable about it she won't do it again. If not then you have nothing to worry about. Let her be who she is

My dd (4) also has her christmas party on monday and is also 'independently-minded'. I will let her choose but may guide her gently Xmas Grin. Her teacher and classmates already know she's quirky... When they had a charity 'own clothes day' a few weeks ago she turned up in stripey top, spotty tights, jeans hot pants, pink shoes, many many hair clips, and a neon green coat... She had a fab day Smile

Oh, and speaking from personal experience, there is no way anyone could have made me wear a princess dress at the age of 5! I was (am) a tomboy Smile. I would just let her get on with it and I am sure she won't be the only one not in a pink dress.

There is always a wide variety at our school's parties. And sadly, there is always the child whose Mum had forgotten.

Thanks ! Am hoping 4-5 year olds will just take it in their stride, and am so grateful that I have enough friends amongst the mums to know that I won't get judged as I leave the playground! I want her to be happy, and relaxed, and I really don't want to force her into a dress - its just I can see some negatives in the situation that she will not be aware of. But that's parenting I guess!
