Would marks be awarded if a child answers correctly but omits signs in their answers such as £ sign or cm

For example
What is the total amount of £1.00 and 20p? and then the child answers
1.20

What would be the lenght of xyz in centimeters? say it was 8cm and the child answers 8.

Would probably be given. Why?

From memory, I think the unit does need to be given, but they would get a mark for the correct answer.

Feenie · 08/12/2011 22:29

Not sure, I think 1.20 would be good enough - and with the 8cm, I bet the cm is already in the box on the answer paper.

samstown · 08/12/2011 22:29

I am almost sure it is accepted.

samstown · 08/12/2011 22:30

Yes, was going to say, I think sometimes they put the unit next to the box. I think I have Y3 paper and markscheme lying around somewhere here, but I have no idea where!

The reason why is I went to check DD progress this term. The teacher then apparently pulled out all her 3 Maths answer sheets, 2 for Mental and 1 that they can use a calculator. It was the explanation on the strict marking scheme on units that left me a little puzzled as DD lost about 4 marks on this yet the answers were correct. DD got an explanation that next time the units will need to be put down other wise no marks.

I have been looking at the marking schmes and seem like marks shoukd have been awarded-link below. DD school new junior school seems to rely heavily on testing but and set targets based on this. If this is then not being being done correctly then it raises some concerns but again it might just be a very strict teacher.

That marking scheme does say it should have been accepted with no units.

I think the teacher is just being overly strict as it is good practice to include the units in your answer in my opinion.
