I have been asked for an interview for a Year 5/6 teaching job. I am so chuffed even to get to the interview stage I have applied for so many jobs for so long, I've lost count. As an NQT I am not sure what would be good questions for me to ask at the interview and if anybody has got any ideas regarding the 30 minute teaching bit to 14, mixed ability kids I would be eternally grateful and say prayers in years to come for your repayment in good fortune.

The brief is:: To solve one-step and two-step problems involving whole numbers and decimals, using at least one of the four operations, choosing and using appropriate calculation strategies.

Also I will have to do some kind of planning activity which I have never had to do before what sort of thing might I expect?

Thankyou so much for taking the time to help me with this and sharing your wisdom.

Sorry of course I have done plenty of planning I meant in an interview situation!

I would think about some activities involving say Christmas shopping. Argos has a 10% sale, how much would a PSP originally costing £200 be after the reduction? You would neeed to model calculating 10%, the LA children could work out what the reduction would be, the next set the new price, more able children could use the 10% to calculate 20, 40 and 15% reductions, you can extend this even further to calculate 1/2 % figures. You are then using division-to calculate 10%, multiplication, to find multiples of 10% and subtraction to calculate the new price.
Planning activities MIGHT involve planning a further lesson following on from the one you did, this would show your ability to use AFL to plan from children's current learning, however it might be something completely unconnected, every school might have a different viewpoint.
Good Luck, you might want to try the TES website but there, be prepared to offer your own ideas first, they can be a little harsh on those who ask for help without offering their own ideas first!

Bless you snowball, I was thinking along the Xmas shopping lines and your refinement is really helpful.

A year 5/6 mixed ability group could well range from level1/2 up to level 6 ( my class does!) so you need to be prepared! Good Luck!

Snowball 6 levels in one class...wowser! Luckily they have told me it is an average class so no need to plan for that many. I have set prices at round figures ie. £120.00, £8.00, £200.00 and £75.00 is this fulfilling the brief in your opinion and do you think I should throw in some pence figures for HA's? Thankyou so much for your help..I do think some kind of Divine intervention will be required for me to get it I think I may well be just interview fodder that greases the mill and I am sure they will have stronger candidates in mind but at least I will be able to say I have tried.

Even an "average class" may have a couple of level 5's in, so i would certainly have some "pence" figures as extension activities for your HA-even if you don't use them it shows you have thought about next steps and extending your more able ( one of my year 5's is a 6B at the moment so heaven knows where he will be by the time he finishes year 6!)

Good Luck and just remember, interviewing is an expensive process and they won't just throw someone in to keep the numbers up, they must believe you are in with a good chance! Xmas Smile
