ORT colour equivalent? Just curious about the level dc is reading at home. Thanks.

Hmm, I think they are just above ORT, that doesn't mean a huge amount tho. DD2 was reading level 5 ORT at school and rainbow fairy books at home - I thought she should be classed as completed on the ORT if she was reading RFB, but I then found she was missing out any words the couldn't pronounce.

I also have to admit to hating horrid henry. There are nicer books out there!!!

Moln · 02/12/2011 22:23

say they are above ort definetly.

There are early reader horrid henry too.

Have a look on amazon or book people sometimes they have the age guide

fluffytowels · 02/12/2011 22:29

Is this stealth boasting? Is he 3? Wink

It depends, there are early reader versions, and normal versions.

TheRepublicOfDreams · 02/12/2011 22:30

Thanks - will go on to amazon/book people and have a look around. I dont think they are the early reader ones (i didnt know they did different ones! Blush)

I have no idea what rainbow fairy books are - I will look them up too. Are the actually about fairies? I think it depends whether you have boys or girls whether they go for Henry or Fairies! :)

I would say they are below ORT 10. That was the level ds was on at school when he was reading HH at home.

Moln · 02/12/2011 22:38

early reader ones hve 'early reader' written in a banner on top of front cover, so if the books he's reading don't then they are the standard ones

there are 10 levels in ort? Didn't know that! For some reaasom thought there was just 7!

TheAvocadoOfWisdom · 02/12/2011 22:42

I think some of the HH books have quite tricky vocab and phrasing. DS1 is on ORT11 and I think HH is harder in general. The early reader ones are great, maybe on a par with ORT9-10

fluffytowels · 02/12/2011 22:52

here are the early readers ones.

I have read them to DS for a while now (since end of reception) as well as the other ones. I don't think there's much difference, except the ER have more pictures and less text per page.

DS is ORT level 5 and not up to reading them. It's more a confidence thing as at the moment he will only read school books.

We have just finished reading the first Captain Underpants (I read to him). DS loved it but what I would say is .... it's American, so some references are a bit strange. I changed some of the words to make it more English. Also, because it's based on a comic book, there are pages written in comic type etc. I think some children might struggle with reading in the wrong font or a different format Blush.

fluffytowels · 02/12/2011 22:55

Apparently ORT goes up to 16. What level counts as Free Reader?

MollieO · 03/12/2011 11:14

Ds has the usual HH not early readers. They are harder than Captain Underpants but I reckon on a par to what he was reading at ORT 10. I think school keep them on a lower level than they actually can read.

I love Captain Underpants. Ds read all of them to me. I love them and the names of the characters. Ds drew a picture of Prof Poopypants and took it to school to show his teacher. Grin

level 10 in dds school counts as free reader, but ort goes well beyond that.

Lizcat · 03/12/2011 13:56

At DD's school Horrid Henry along with rainbow fairies are some of the books offered to the year 3 free readers. Free reading is deemed to gave gone beyond the end of all the ORT levels. There is some tricky vocab in each chapter I feel and also the number of words per page and number pages make them meatier than ORT.

There is also the difference between reading quietly to yourself and reading out loud. If you read Horrid Henry out you need to have a huge amount of expression.
