What book stage/level/colour band should year 1 children be reading?

There are loads of age appropriate books that aren't in a reading scheme and don't have pictures to give clues. Animals of Farthing Woods, Secret Seven, Roald Dahl books just to name a few.

I help with reading in Year 1 and Reception in a state school. The reading range is very wide in both.

In Year 1, I would say that at the moment about around half of the class is on pink or red, about a quarter on Yellow or Blue, and a quarter on the 'higher' colours up to purple.

The expected target for our YR1 is to be on green by the end of the year. DD is 6.5, in yr2 and on purple, but she was on green for what seemed like forever, 5mins on orange and skipped turquoise... the purple stage seems to be lasting a while though :) I think kids just plateau sometimes and then leap forward.

My eldest started year 1 on red. Ended it on green.
Youngest started on purple ad ended on white.
Big range.

No idea. DDs school told us that they use a different banding system to the regular ones and books from lots of different schemes to stop parents and children worrying about where they are with reading!

For what its worth DD read Ginn level 6 earlier this term and is now on a scheme called Flying Boot .

She's happy she appears to be able to read reasonaby well for her age so I don't worry (and even if I did I'd have no chance of working it out anyway)

ds (yr 1) finishing ort level 9/storyworlds stage 9 - not the best reader in his class. Lots of attention from teaching staff to encourage expression and observe punctuation - also has rhyme/poetry books and has had simple 'plays' to read. Nice to have a wide variety of texts.
