think i've finally got ds to accept that he doesn't say 'shepherd 9, this is so exciting', but that he is shepherd 9.

MuddlingMackem · 30/11/2011 21:28

*Ack, that should be 'mothers'. Mary and Joseph aren't twins. :)

Its my little girls first nativity next week, she is in reception. She is adamant she's playing the part of a radiator. Thinking it must be some sort of alternative production I have been scratching my head all week wondering what sort of costume a radiator would require.

I swear I only realised today that she is actually a narrator!! Whoops.

girliefriend · 30/11/2011 21:32

My dd is a Christmas chameleon!!! ffs, where do I get a chameleon outfit from?!!!

Parkrage · 30/11/2011 21:33

No angst, just relief at DS' part this year. He's a villager, last year he was a chicken.

Marne · 30/11/2011 21:36

My dd2 is going to be an Angel, TBH i will be in tears if she makes it into the hall and stands with the others, she has Autism and is in MS school, she can't cope with the sound in the hall and often refusses to go in there, so far she has taken part in rehersals and is planning on taking part, to me she will be the star of the show and i'm sure some of the parents who know her will feel the same. I will be taking the tissues Grin.

Hulababy · 30/11/2011 21:36

I work in Y1. We have our dress rehearsal on Monday and the big show next Thursday. We only gave out parts last week. Eeek!

Ohgoonthenpouranother · 30/11/2011 21:54

Competitive costumes at our school. Reception are all snowflakes
White t shirt & tights instruction sent home.
Cue DD that X's flashes.
I just keep thinking pissing myself laughing about poor reception staff having to get 40 kids into TIGHTS.
Me thinks they should have said LEGGINGS.

treas · 30/11/2011 22:02

Dd is a shepherd and is thoroughly discussed she is tooGrin

Dd auditioned for Mary but it went to her 'best' friend - who from the sounds of things let her excitement at getting the lead go to her head and laughed out loud when it was announced dd was a shepherd.

All I've heard since is how Mary is always getting her lines wrong in practice - not helped by the fact that Dd know Mary's, Joseph's and her own lines off by heartBlush

Anyway it's an improvement on last year when dd was the only child in her class not to get a line and so her only part was to wave the US flagHmm

treas · 30/11/2011 22:03

disgusted not discussedBlush

teacherwith2kids · 30/11/2011 22:04

Little donkey, I hope that you go a VERY VERY long way down that dusty road and DON'T COME BACK because that way we won't have to sing about you EVER AGAIN...

:)

eandemum · 30/11/2011 22:09

My DD (6) came home uttering those dreaded words;

"I need a brown top and brown trousers"
BROWN!!

(She is an owl)

KatyMac · 30/11/2011 22:11

I don't worry DD is organising ours, she wrote paraphrased it & there are 3 songs for the parents to sing

School age children read if they want to infant with a junior (or occasionally senior) partner then babies find the right character and put it in the stable at appropriate points

This is sorted by only putting out the correct character at each stage & having several versions of each person (eg 3 baby Jesus, 9 kings etc)

I do nothing (Hire the hall, buy & serve the food, co-ordinate Father Christmas & tidy up)

Mum2be79 · 30/11/2011 22:11

In 2 days I begin my maternity. Other Y1 teacher has been absent for 4 weeks due to illness so I took it on despite not being here for the performance.

I'm one teacher who finds out what roles were in the previous year and makes sure the same roles are dished out to different kids.

It gets harder as you move 'up' the school as some kids are just 'better' at smaller, less spoken parts than others. Hence the reason why some end up being the same role if it does not require 'much'.

BridgetJonesPants · 30/11/2011 22:12

DD was desperate to be Mary but alas it wasn't to be, she was just a camel (thankfully school provided the costumes).

Turned out that 'the camel' was the main character and she stole the show Grin. Despite this, we were still not allowed to mention Mary in our house Smile.

mrsshopalot · 30/11/2011 22:56

Treas I feel and share your angst - DS in yr 1 had to 'competition' for the last narrator part - he 'lost' (his words!) and chose to be an angel. He is now appalled realising that he is the only boy angel out of 30 or so, does not want to wear a dress and gutted he's not saying anything when all his mates are Sad
Told his teacher he was upset and was told he should be happy he's on stage all the way through...pile on the humiliation why don't you! Have negotiated he can wear his martial arts outfit instead of a dress.Hmm
Completely realise it's a logistical miracle that the Christmas play happens at all, but for us it's such a shame that last year he loved it and this year has lost all interest...let's hope for HUGE speaking part in Yr2!!

Takver · 30/11/2011 22:58

No particular angst here, other than getting a blow-by-blow recount of the plot, complete with funny lines (in Welsh) more or less every day.

(In case you're wondering - which you probably weren't - it does diverge a little from the traditional story, as Joseph's satnav goes wrong and they end up camping out in our local bus garage Grin )

Luckily for us dd was in the choir wearing school uniform last year when it was all 60s costumes, and this year is just jeans and sparkly t-shirts!

lljkk · 30/11/2011 23:13

My only complaint is that they are doing the same play as last year.
On the plus side, one of the teachers wrote it so I know it's really good. DS2 was a rocking angel last year and he's Santa's H&S foreman this year.

DS3 is a cow at my insistence because we happen to own a cow suit. :)

Dillie · 30/11/2011 23:25

My DD is an Alien. Yup, you did read that right! ;) Its a Nativity with a difference. Basically it is the usual nativity but the aliens have crash landed. Bless her, she has been trying to get her teeth (or lack of!) around the line "and more importantly where are we?"

At least all I need to get is sone green trousers. But can I fid any? Can I @!?@!!!!

ASuitableGirl · 30/11/2011 23:38

DD is a Fairy Light. Have sent in black top and leggings as requested and they will be making the other part of the costume at school.

Production happening next Wednesday and Thursday :)

beingarebel · 01/12/2011 09:05

My dd was a king last night in her nativity. She turned up in her homemade out of old curtains costume. She looked really good until the 2 other kings stood next to her in their shop bought really expensive costumes. She was happy though.

DeWe · 01/12/2011 10:11

If ds's nativity doesn't have a shepherd opeing one of the king's presents, running off with baby Jesus then instigating a punch up among the rest of the shepherds I will be surprised be pleased.

He's a shepherd with sheepdog as we don't have a sheep. I've tried to drum into him that sheep dogs don't bark or jump up/lick people because they might frighten the sheep. They just sit still with the shepherd and like to hear the shepherd singing. fat chance

ItsLoueyALotLikeChristmas · 01/12/2011 10:56

DS2 has to dress up as a star and is either a narrator or in the choir 90 kids in reception so it must be tough to find things for all of them to do. He does however know all the songs, and in which order they come as he merrily sang shouted them in B&Q last weekend. Managed to get a star costume in asda for £6. Now on the hunt for a black t shirt to wear underneath.

I'm on maternity leave at the moment and take my hat of to all of you who have to deal with this and work! DS1 (ASD) is apparently in a concert but I've got nothing out of him and school haven't sent home anything about a costume. So either he doesn't need one or I'll be panicking sometime next week.

Elibean · 01/12/2011 11:48

No angst, exactly...

...unless you count the dds chucking book bags and lunch boxes at me as they come out of school, singing 'Little Mummeeeeee, Carry Book Baaaaags....' Hmm
