How old are children generally when they learn about these? DS says that they haven't been told about these at school. He is 7. I don't think I learned these either. I am 40-something...

Bet he has but under a different name.

I don't remember learning these at all. Then again, I spent most of my school career bored out of my brain, staring out of the window.

Conjunctions usually make an appearance around year 2, probably called "joining words" and starting with "and" and "because". Prepositions aren't formally taught until yr 5/6 but will crop up before then!

We teach conjunctions and prepositions from reception and call them connectives and where words

I agree with Mrz. We are pretty hot on connectives in year 2 and really work on getting children to use them accurately in writing. They seem to be more commonly referred to as conjunctions in KS2 though.

I tell my DC that prepositions tell us position (ie where things are) and conjunctions are joining words.

Ah those italics didn't work for me!
