writing not as good as reading and maths, year 2

My ds (year 2) is doing really well at maths and reading and predicted a level 3b in these for end of year SATS. Although his writing is good too (currently 2b/2a), i wonder if i should be doing more to bring it up to the levels he is at in the other subjects. What could i do, that wouldn't take up much time, to improve his writing. His handwriting is fine by the way.

Hi, this post could (almost,) have been written by me, last year. Ds (now yr 3) was predicted 3b in all three, but I was then told at Easter he was still 2a for writing & was unlikely to hit his target. In the end Im very pleased to say he did actually get a 3b (external moderator confirmed his work was 3b level right at the end of term). So there is still plenty of time to go up a level or two.

My understanding is that it is usually writing that is behind for most dcs. My ds's teacher gave me a list of the targets (I can...) he had to meet to get 3c & 3b, so perhaps you could ask his teacher for some guidance like this. There wasnt actually that many criteria, I was quite surprised. If I recall correctly it was things like using wow (descriptive) words, compound sentences with appropriate connectives (not just 'and') and punctuation including speech marks.

Tbh I didn't actually have to do that much work with ds to help him, (he is not the sitting down & writing for fun type of kid,) I just explained, that although he was doing well at school he wasn't doing a well as the teachers thought he could, and went over the i can targets to ensure he understood what they were expecting of him. Didn't really need much more than that.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry too much. The better he does in Y2, the more the pressure will be piled on as he moves up the school.
