Maths - Telling the time on an analogue clock, what year?

TheRepublicOfDreams · 22/11/2011 21:21

Is anyone able to tell me what year they learn to tell the time on an analogue clock? Is it on the hour/half hour in yr 2 then quarter past, quarter to in yr 3 for example? Or do the do it all at once?

Thank you

DD (Y2) is doing quarter to, past, and halves now as well as translating that to digital and vice versa. I think they touch on it in Y1 too.

PalmTrees · 22/11/2011 21:50

In our school, some children will learn half past, quarter to and digital in yr2 but some will just do o'clock and half past. Depends on their maths group.

Thank you. Do they have to be secure in analogue before they start digital? Do they link it to the five times table?

Ours seem to be doing digital and analogue at the same time. Not sure re. the 5x table - DD did that in yr 1. (she is top table for maths though)

PalmTrees · 22/11/2011 22:11

Generally do analogue and digital alongside, not really linked with knowing 5x table at our school I don't think.

Grade 2 (Yr. 2) here in Canada. They do both at the same time. Converting digital to analogue and vice-versa.

TheRepublicOfDreams · 22/11/2011 22:34

Interesting they do it at the same time. I always thought it was separate. In fact, I think I learned digital first? Certainly remember finding it easier!

DD1 is in Y9 and she still can't.Sad

UniS · 22/11/2011 22:53

Yr3 had a lesson on just that subject today.

But Y1 have touched on it already.

simpson · 22/11/2011 23:18

DS did this in yr1 although he was on top table for maths.

As patriciaHolm said he seemed to do analogue and digital at the same time.

ibizagirl · 23/11/2011 06:17

Do it at home! I learnt my dd to tell the time early and also money stuff. In year 2 sats there were questions about converting digital/analogue and dd could do it but i know a lot that couldn't. They couldn't even tell the time.

Iamnotminterested · 23/11/2011 08:19

DD also has done this in lessons this week, to and past in five minutes and converting to digital. She finds it easy but DD1 - y6 - would have found it harder in year 3.

I work in Y1. We definitely cover o'clock and half past, and touch on quarter past/to and beyond this with children who are able to do so.

Best thing to do if have numbered analogue clocks at home and refer to them lots.

Elibean · 23/11/2011 18:16

dd1 did the half past, quarters and o'clocks in Y2, but touched on them in Y1 as well.

She's still hopeless with analogue clocks in Y3, even though we have them at home - she's utterly unmotivated as she knows perfectly well how to tell the time with digital clocks Hmm

Iamnotminterested · 23/11/2011 19:45

I bought a cardboard time-teaching clock with moving hands from the ELC years ago; It has been so well used that it is virtually falling apart.

Money VERY well spent.

Startail - my DD is also in Y9 and can't tell the time on an analogue clock. DS1 was in YR (reception), DS2 is in Y3, and has 'got' on the hour and half past the hour. He is now working on quarter past and quarter to.

DD, well, we have given up now - as she says, she always has a mobile with her that has the digital time on it, and 99% of clocks that you see on a regular basis are digital these days. I gave up at the end of Y8.

DD1's dyslexic and I think it's the short term memory thing. Just can't hold all the minutes to, minutes past and the hour in her head at once. She gets in a total muddle. Has a digital watch and has to be given all appointments as 12.15 or 12.45 etc. 1/4 to or past would have her 1/2 hour early or late.
Totally maddening because her main weakness is spelling. She's good at maths and science so why this total blank spot with analogue clocksHmm
