What year is the compact method of multiplication taught and should a year 5 pupil be able to do the compact method of multiplication, if she mastered the grid and extended column methods some time ago and is very happy with the compact method?

I have taught huge amounts of year 8 and 9 students who can't do it accurately without being reminded of the method.

Should my dc be forced to do the grid method still then? she hates it and says it slows her up.

It really depends on the individual school, some don't teach a compact method at all and stick with grid method, others introduce it during the later years of key stage 2. Grid method should not be considered less advanced because it is less traditional. BUT... If a child is more comfortable with a certain method (even if it had not been taught by the teacher) and they get the correct answer, they really should be able to use the method they feel most comfortable with. Talk to your dc's teacher, if your daughter can use compact method confidently and she gets the answer right I can't see why it should be a problem.

GCSE examiners report that grid methods in most Often leads to correct answer as compact method often results in zero being forgotten. I teach grid method in year 8/9 as it works for many students. It isn't necessarily slower. If your dd can use this method accurately then yes she can use it as lOng as it is not a lesson on aparticular method. Iifjt fo a lesson on different methods and expect them all to try a range of ways - I would not accept a child just doing one method in this case as it defeats the point of the lesson but generally it should be ok as long as she isn't forgetting the zero or otherwise repeatedly going wrong.
As Milly said above, patents often think grid method is inferior but it honestly isn't. It helps introduce other things such as multiplying out double brackets.

Why is there such a discrepancy between schools? I thought the primary framework or curriculum guidelines meant that pupils were taught the same method at roughly the same time?

Dd1 has always found the "old" method of multiplication much quicker, easier and accurate. She could do it in year 3, unfortuately they insisted on the grid method in year 4. Hmm

My y6 and y4 children started at a new school in September. In their old school they taught grid method in y3 and compact method in y4 but ot was considered ok to use grid method in y4 too.

In their new school they don't teach compact method even in y6 but they allow my oldest to use compact as he can do it accurately and they realise it's pointless to make him do a new method. His school has a very transient population so apparently there are 4 or 5 ways of multiplying and dividing that the teacher sees in maths work.
